DESIGN NAME: Safe Agua Colombia: Calientamigos
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Water Heater & Pressurized Shower
INSPIRATION: Through field research in Altos del Pino, an informal settlement near Bogota, Colombia, we discovered that women spend up to six hours a day waiting for water to heat up for chores, which holds them hostage to their homes, limiting their ability to earn income.
Families prioritize warm showers for kids to help them stay healthy and clean for school. The ability to bathe comfortably was a resounding concern. Without running water, bathing is an involved process, requiring multiple steps: heating, mixing, carrying & scooping water. Most families resort to bathing by parts. This process is undignified, uncomfortable, time-consuming, and can lead to increased chance of illness in children.
Calientamigos is an affordable solution to improve the lives of the families of Altos del Pino and the nearly 2.5 billion people who lack access to adequate sanitation and hygiene.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Calientamigos is comprised of three modular components: a portable electric water heater; a foot pump that pressurizes the warm water; and a multi-purpose faucet head. Calientamigos is flexible enough to work with any container found around the home. It heats water more quickly, at a lower cost than existing methods, is more affordable than existing market options, and more accessible than installing a gravity-fed water system. Calientamigos helps kids stay clean and healthy for school, and frees their families from the time and energy spent inefficiently heating water.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: An efficient way to heat & pressurize water, providing needed hygiene, comfort and dignity for the nearly 2.5 billion around the world living without adequate sanitation and hygiene.
Business model provides for local assembly in conjunction with an NGO or licensing to a manufacturer for more efficient production with distribution by local entrepreneurs.
Target market price of the entire system at $25, payable in low-cost increments for each module hot water is accessible to families living on $4-10/day.
Calientamigos supports healthy hygiene practices to reduce incidence of illness.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started August 2013 in Bogota, Colombia and finished December of 2013 in Pasadena, CA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: MATERIALS:
ABS (Corazon pump body, Bomba heater shell, Gota faucet)
Nylon tubing
Polyethylene (Corazon pump)
Bomba heating element: bimetallic spring, bent steel coil, tungsten inner heating element, epoxy, electrical cord.
PRODUCTION METHOD:
Bringing down manufacturing costs was a significant design driver to yield an affordable product:
The Corazon pump, Gota faucet head, & Bomba submersible water heater are designed for manufacture with minimal tooling. They consist of 1 modular piece that is multiplied. The products are stripped down to the essentials minimizing costs and breakage The Bomba’s protective shell is made out of 4 identical injection molded pieces that lock together. Designing the shell in 4 identical parts saves money on tooling & makes repair easier. The Corazon is made out of 1 injection molded piece of ABS that’s mirrored to form the top & bottom of the pump. The body of the Gota is made of 2 identical ABS parts that snap together. The core where water passes through is made out of rotational molded HDPE.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Size/dimensions: Bomba:6”x6”x7” Corazon:8”x4”x4 Gota:3.25”x3.25”x5”
Weight of the project: Approximately 2 lbs total (without tubing)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Calientamigos was developed from a 2-week co-creation field research trip in Colombia that focused on design goals, both qualitative and quantitative, that would allow us to co-create affordable products & systems with Base of the Pyramid families and produce sustainable, scalable, real-world implementation. Emphasis was placed on addressing specific problems, with both quantitative and qualitative impacts and producing solutions at the scales of products for individuals and households; systems, spaces and services for the community and beyond.
CHALLENGE: Social Challenge: Create a scaleable, affordable solution to improve the lives of the families of Altos del Pino and the nearly 2.5 billion people who lack access to adequate sanitation and hygiene.
Technical Challenge: Affordable, safe, efficient, flexible, durable way to heat and pressurize water.
