DESIGN NAME: Lecomotion
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Nested urban E-trike
INSPIRATION: The concept was inspired by nested shopping carts and bike sharing system. Sharing bikes are becoming increasingly popular! Both environmentally friendly and innovative, the LECOMOTION E-trike is intended to be a replacement for the car.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The LECOMOTION E-trike concept is a nested electric-assist tricycle. It is a new transport sharing system. It is designed to nest within each other in a line for compact storage and to facilitate collecting and moving many at one time.
Pleasant, safe and spacious, the Lecomotion E-trike is a new transport experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The cargo also allowed transporting 2 kids or one adult. Pedalling assistance is provided to help to carry weight of the cargo. You can use it as a normal bike, without the battery, or with the supportive battery. The LECOMOTION is fitted with tree wheels for more comfort. On top of the battery, the charge level and the timing are displayed to inform the user. For safety, back and front lights are integrated.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project has been developed in 2013
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Its bottom is made from EPP– firm enough to maintain structural integrity. The frame is made of aluminium and the cargo structure of nylon strings.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Overall dimension: 1760 (length) x 950 (width) x 670 (depth)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The LECOMOTION is designed to become the favourite urban means of transport. The objective was to create a product easy to use and very intuitive. Observation and analysis of human behaviours have determined urban transport needs. Design research was mainly based on user feedbacks of urban bike, what people like and what are important to them. All is about urban transport experience!
CHALLENGE: What makes the LECOMOTION so unique is the nesting mechanism, and it was hard to make it simple. I came up with an intuitive folding mechanism that requires as less as possible actions for the user to nest them. The LECOMOTION has been designed with in-wheel motor and in-crank generator, this is why there’s no need for bike’s chain.
Another challenge was to give the user charged bike from the line. The system FIFO, first in first out in the parking point has been the solution to create bikes rotation. The locomotion is automatically charged from the rail.
