DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: MYKITA / DAMIR DOMA 1.3
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sunglasses
INSPIRATION: DD1.3 was a real collaboration. We were talking to Damir Doma for a long time, because we were both interested in each other work and wanted to find some common ground. The series of frames we finally designed together with him are inspired not only by two similar design philosophies meeting, but also two components meeting in a functional liaison.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The progressive use of materials and the aesthetic created by a visible construction forms the basis of the MYKITA / Damir Doma design language. The frame DD1.3 is an avant-garde interpretation of the traditional pilot frame from the forties and fifties that propels the classic frame in a design characteristic of MYKITA / Damir Doma into the 21st century. The choice of materials provides a contrast by marrying delicate stainless steel with voluminous acetate.
The sunglasses are a result of complex handcraft.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Technically speaking the main feature of this eyewear piece is the combination of acetate and metal for both functional and decorative reasons. While spring steel provides the framework of the piece, an acetate frame serves a triple purpose: It holds the lenses, forms the nose contact area on the back side and gives extra stability through an extra upper bridge. Combined with MYKITA’s isonic screwless hinges, DD1.3 is a lightweight aviator frame, both fashion piece and intricate construction.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2013 in Berlin and finished in November 2013 in Berlin.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Our steel frames are etched from a sheet and then bent into shape with hand tools. The manufactory character of our production allows great flexibility in production of varying models. The cellulose acetate parts are milled from 8mm sheets, tumbled and hand polished. We design our frames starting from a front view line drawing, but in this case a lot of testing went on parallel to the styling process, to make sure the construction would work.
