DESIGN NAME: bibili
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Shelves System
INSPIRATION: In Switzerland it is very difficult to see the horizon. In fact, there is always a mountain or something to reduce the wide open space where the horizon is the only limitation to our desire for total freedom, deep breathing and a certain sense of the absolute. We experience this feeling of being confined every day in our homes, which are becoming smaller and smaller.
Therefore, it is vital to increase the living space which we have. Although we can not push walls back, we can intervene with the furniture which occupies our world.
The search for ways to increase our living space let to the " bibili " shelves.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The originality of this design is that the unit has its own personality as well as its basic function. In fact, its shape and the angle from which one views it, express different impressions of human behavior such as different attitudes as feelings. The furniture gives the impression of being alive, thus eliciting empathy. One only has to look at it in profile to imagine it listening indiscreetly or looking over its shoulder
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Although one set of shelves is sufficient on its own, the act of grouping several units side by side creates a graphic surface on a wall.
In this case, models of the same or of varying dimension can be grouped together. One can have a different graphic mural effect in this way. One can also choose the placement of the large width uprights, putting them at the top or the bottom of the unit. The angle / corner modules can be placed in the corner of the walls.
Note that it is strongly recommended to fix the top of the shelves to the wall.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in December 2013 to terminate in February 2014

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The shelf elements are assembled by a system of pin and mortise joint. A system of screws at the bottom, the top and in the middle prevents any collapse of the elements in-between.
The shelves and uprights are made of chipboard panels 19mm thick, covered in melamine.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of the modules presented are:
Large width shelf: W 838mm x D 400mm x H 2143mm
Small width shelf: W 598mm x D 400mm x H 2143mm
Small width corner shelf: W 755mm x D 400mm x H 2143mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research is based on the visual interaction between a wall and a piece of furniture that is a truncated unit whose " non-existent" but imagined part is beyond the supporting wall. The unit must have obvious dynamics which let it extend into the wall, the reason why the uprights are triangular. It was in manipulating the elements of the model on a reduced scale that a dynamic, graphic line appeared, by applying the principle of inverting the triangular uprights on the same furniture unit.
CHALLENGE: The simplicity hides very often complications, what was the case. Indeed, realize that are needed two different basic modules to obtain the sought visual effect was not immediate. We find then to evolve really in three-dimensional what asked for a lot of attention, especially during the construction of the prototypes, in front of spare, quite identical parts.
Another difficulty was to determine the width of the modules of angle. Finally, it was made by respecting the purely visual aspect with regard to the other modules
