| DESIGN NAME: Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island PRIMARY FUNCTION: Architecture - Hotel INSPIRATION: The initial massing concepts for the hotel were analysed using a solar/lighting programme. The results allowed the selective installation of burnished bronze solar fins to the façade to shield where it needs most. The resultant form resembled the image of a dragon wrapping the building, further rooting the building into the culture and traditions of Asia. The dramatic glass bottomed cantilevered pool on the roof top, shimmers at night, is considered to be like the gleaming pearl often associated with the Chinese dragons. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Some of the most fulfilling designs are those embedded and contextualised in their local culture. It was the designer’s intent from the outset to reflect, in the architectural expression, the vibrant nature of Asia, Hong Kong and Wanchai. The shading device on the hotel façade resembles a dragon; the glass bottomed cantilevered pool is considered as a pearl often associated with dragons. The hotel design also provides legibility at both the City (macro) and Human (micro) scale. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The unique external shading device of the hotel provides selective and intelligent screening only to where it needs most. A solar/lighting programme was deployed to analyse the sun shade and the shading effect of the neighbouring buildings create a distinct pattern of sun and shade on the elevations. One continuous piece of acrylic panel is used for the cantilevered swimming pool to avoid sudden failure of glass panel and the size of acrylic panel can be tailored to allow obstruct the view. The result created a distinct pattern of sun and shade on the elevations, resembling a dragon. Designer utilised this valuable information to create a unique external shading device for the hotel that would provide selective and intelligent screening only to where it needs most to create a golden dragon to root the building to the Asian culture.
