DESIGN NAME: Guide
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Library System, Book Rack
INSPIRATION: Finding a book you are looking for in a short span of time is difficult in libraries. The existing library systems fail to communicate to the user about the exact location of the book & it makes the librarian's task very challenging & hectic as he/she is unable to attend everyone. This thought inspire us to design a library racking system that should communicate easily & efficiently with the user in solving their purpose.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Very aesthetic, yet fully functional. Breaks the notion of a stereotypical stagnant library space into an intuitive & communicative space. Effective color coded interaction between the user & the product that leads to least time consumption in finding a book. Self adjustable shelves that could accommodate any book size. The lower couple of shelves could be positioned at an angle for better visibility of book name to the user & he is not required to bend down to identify book placed in lower shelves.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Color coded library racks that help user identify the row, where the desired book is located. Each Row has an indexing panel that tells the user about the exact location of shelf where the book is placed through acrylic signages consisting of numbers or alphabets and book types.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in September 2013 and finished in January 2014 in Bangalore, India.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Library Front made of sheet metal & is bent precisely in RAS machine to get the desired form. It gets attached to the Index panel made of Pre-Lam MDF. Shelves are made of sheet metal and are hung with the help of cantilever support. Signages are made of clear acrylic and are snapped into the index panel.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Single unit- 1950mm(h) X 350mm(d) X 1095mm(w)
Back to Back unit- 1950mm X 650mm(d) X 1095mm(w)
[note: each extra rack addition increases the width by 900mm]

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our research in the main stream libraries yielded very interesting observations. The first visual impression being library spaces are stagnant & boring. The existing index do not communicate efficiently to the user about the book location. As the communication is not effective, the user comes back to librarian repeatedly to find out the required book. Also the gap between the racks is very less for an user to bend down & search books in the lower shelves.
CHALLENGE: We have tried to change the existing library system in terms of design, looks & usability without changing the basic function. Each step came to us as a challenge. Being an economical product, we have made an effort to make use of minimum material without compromising the structural strength & processes, ease in manufacturing & special effort has been put to make the product completely modular & flat-packed which helps in transportation.
