DESIGN NAME: Void
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Entertainment Unit
INSPIRATION: The inspiration came after a frustrating meeting with a potential furniture maker to build an entertainment unit. In order to make it easier to build, the small changes he proposed, compromised the original aesthetics. What was at first frustrating, became motivation for deeper creativity, as I noticed the daytime running lights of an Audi Q3. This sparked an entire redesign. And ultimately, I have that furniture maker to thank!
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An asymmetric entertainment unit designed with a void. The cabinet door and drawer utilise a push-to-open latch and the drawer has a soft-close runner mechanism. The cabinet door is hinged at the base to allow easy access to the player cavity. Cable access is via the back of the cabinet. The front walnut timber face is tapered from the outside edge. Additionally, the drawer front sits proud of the taper, but still being recessed behind the front of the unit.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Interaction with the entertainment unit is exclusively through the push-to-open mechanisms that allow the design to remain uncluttered by external fixtures.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in December 2011, and was completed in September 2013, in Melbourne Australia, as a personal piece.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Solid Walnut timber construction for the 'outer' component of the design. The storage area is constructed out of medium density fibreboard and sprayed in a satin finish 2-pac white. Push-to-open draw with soft-close mechanism. Push-to-open door, hinged at the bottom with friction brake to control the doors drop.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The overall dimensions for the unit are: 3000mm Long x 500mm deep x 350mm high.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Other than sourcing the desired mechanisms and suitable natural timber selections, limited research was required.
CHALLENGE: The simplistic overall appearance masks the complex detail in the construction. Therefore, the most difficult aspect of the design was engaging a manufacturer to construct the entertainment unit with that high level of detail, without compromising any aspect of the design.
