DESIGN NAME: One Day
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Animated and Static Logo
INSPIRATION: For a top multinational corporation announcement of their new Instant Messaging & Video Conference application in Israel, the corporation and the “Peres Center for Peace” initiated a joint project that video-documented the daily routine of young Arab and Jewish high-school students and their online interactions and meeting with each other using the new application. I was hired to create the graphics for this joint project that was used in a documentary film, printed on shirts for all the people involved in the project, and used as part of the new application’s marketing campaign in Israel.
I was invited to the “Peres Center for Peace” where all the youth involved in the project were assembled and given ‘ice-breaking’ assignments by the corporation’s staff. I remember watching them and understanding how common and alike are the simple things in life. In the following months I was given access to video recording of their sessions using the new application where the simplicity and accessibility of the technology through which those youth communicate only emphasized in my view how correct was my initial observation.
Although the main subject is use of online application and technologies such as this new application for promoting peace and conversation between young people, I was actually nspired by the normality and the daily routine of the project participants, believing that kids are always kids, regardless of their ethnical background and belonging, and agnostic to their language. I was eager to highlight the simplicity in their life: The desire for ice-cream on a sunny day, the guitar lessons they take, and even their natural lack of desire to go to school in the morning. I decided that my design should look like a sunny day; like it was made in a breeze, lightly and without any difficulties or obstacles to overcome. It had to shine like a warm sun and with plenty of hope in its subtext. Those elements that were a common ground for both Jewish and Arab youth alike are what I chose to focus on in my work. The things that make “One Day” very much the same day for all those young, peace-loving, faithful and optimistic young participants of this unique and so important project.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For a top multinational corporation announcement of their new Instant Messaging & Video Conference application in Israel, the corporation teamed with the “Peres Center for Peace” and under their joint leadership, documented the daily life of Arab and Jewish youth and their interactions using the new application. I was called in by Mr. Yaniv Berman, a respected Israeli director and film maker to join him and design the graphics for a documentary movie “One Day” summarizing this unique project.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As my work was targeted for use in a film, I created an animated logo that uses graphic elements representing a daily life of high-school students circulating around a big camera lens as if they are hands of a clock. In addition to the moving logo I created all other graphic elements used in the film. The moving logo caused a lot of excitement and I was also asked to provide a static logo for having it printed on shirts given as souvenirs to all participants in the event summary ceremony.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project initiation took place at the “Peres Center for Peace” in Tel-Aviv, Israel and was concluded in an official event at Google’s headquarters in Tel-Aviv, Israel where the documentary movie incorporating my work was presented. An excerpt of the movie is publically available to all audiences on YouTube

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In the realization of this project, it was important to me to maintain simplicity and an everyday atmosphere, so I decided to use a collage presentation I created using Adobe PhotoShop CC. From the beginning I knew that this logo has to move. I knew the tempo it needed and I know what needs to happen and when. To achieve this I manually generated each animation frame one-by-one and compiled them to a self-standing high-definition animated logo using iStopMotion software by Boinx.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The graphics where designed to be used in a Full HD resolution (1920by1080) documentary film and the animated logo dimensions were planned accordingly. The movie background had to cover 6 times of the Full HD resolution leading to a huge and detailed 7680by2880 image. In addition, a static logo was created for printing on T-Shirts.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I researched through observing the youth participating in the project, where my objective was to highlight the common and simple things in their daily life. My method was to visit their face-to-face sessions and view their video recordings. No special tools were required. Impact was observed when the film was presented and audience was thrilled and excited. I would like to believe that my work had a small yet meaningful contribution to this important, peace and technology promoting project.
CHALLENGE: The key challenge in this design was to overlook the big and sometime debatable or controversial topics of Jewish and Arab relations and the peace process, and to stay clean and pure in my thoughts. I originally started sketching Arabic and Hebrew fonts aiming at combining languages typographies, but then realized my design should actually be simple, happy and accessible as their online video sessions are. I believe my design reflects overcoming this challenge
