| DESIGN NAME: Woody 1 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Log Holder INSPIRATION: Euclid . Simple geometric solutions to stacking and enhancing the beauty of rustic wood . UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Minimalist simplicity , Solidity , Functionality . The aim was to offset the defects or disadvantages inherant in wood . Firewood is generally dirty and so can not be left in contact with the ground . It is also heavy and requires outdoor/indoor mobility . The first problem in choosing the circular form of Woody 1 was how to raise it off the ground while assuring its stability . Adding feet to the structure was rejected so as to maintain the clean transparancy of the design. The solution for Woody 1 was found in placing a right angle within the circle . In the case of Woody 3 the solution was found in an inverted heart form . Steel wire is , contrary to perception , a very light material . Woody 1 weighs 3Kg. and so allows wood to be carried around easily . Wind tunnel tests also assure these products of high aerodynamic ratings , the fastest log holders around . As log stoves become more common in contemporary settings these holders are proposed in galvanised steel but also in black, white or pink laquer to highlight the surrounding environment . OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Indoor/ Outdoor . Simplicity , delivered without an operating manual . PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: In January 2013 the first steel log holder ( Woodman 1) was shown at NOW- Design à Vivre in Paris . It was a success due to the perceived rarity of this product in the design market. Several other log Holders quickly followed( including Woody 1) and were shown at the ICFF design show in New York in May 2013 . |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Firewood is as rustic and messy as steel is cold and hard . There is a design challenge in combining the two to seek a third dimension in which the defects of both materials combine to produce an aesthetically surprising ideal solution bringing visual clarity to the wood through the refinement of the steel structure . SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Diameter 60cm. Depth 30cm // 10mm. Steel wire . Colours : White , Black , Pink , Galvanised steel . The weight of this product is , surprisingly, only 3 Kg . One often equates steel with weight . This allows the holder to be easily carried around even when loaded . TAGS: logholders , fireplaces , log stoves , wood storage, log holder design .
