DESIGN NAME: Curva Vase Collection
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vase
INSPIRATION: The Curva Vases fluid lines were inspired by the bottom quote and Niemeyer's architectural work, particularly those in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, where I come from.
Inspired from women's body, the Curva vases are versatile as they can be used as decorative element with or without flowers. This key aspect of the project came into consideration after noticing that many users hide their vases when not using them to put flowers in.
"It is not the right angle that attracts me, nor the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. What attracts me is the free and sensual curve — the curve that I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuous course of its rivers, in the body of the beloved woman."
Oscar Niemeyer
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Curva vases were designed with the intent of not being some more vases that are hidden when not used with flowers, but as pieces of design that can be used in different ways according to the user creativity such as decorative items, pencil storage or even as food containers.
Indeed, with or without flowers and always sensual, the broad color range of the Curva Vase collection allows the users to creates either energetic or calm and inspiring feelings, blending in all environments.
Consisting in 3 vases with different shapes and aesthetical feeling, the user may choose to have them all as a family of items or separately according to the environment.
The sensual curved body of the Curva Vase Collection was inspired by Oscar Niemeyer's quote:
"It is not the right angle that attracts me, nor the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. What attracts me is the free and sensual curve — the curve that I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuous course of its rivers, in the body of the beloved woman."
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user can use the vase according to his creativity by placing a flower with water inside, as a decoration object or as a storage for items.

The inner and outer bodies of the Curva vases are manufactured separetly and bonded during assembly. Both are made of PP injection molded, making the Curva Vases easy to produce at large scale and low cost.
The Curva Vase Collection's esthetism appeals to consumers in search of a fashionable product while, the use of PP makes the vase water and impact resistent, strong and long lived, appealing to consumers in search of a design article that will survive the vagaries of life.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project started in India in 2011 while I was lecturing a design history class. Discussing Niemeyer's creations inspired me to use his concept of design in my own work.
The next few months were used to study Nemeyer's portfolio in more details and to reflect on how to integrate his design concepts with my own style of design.
Thoughts were also given on how to create sustainable products that will be used daily rather than be, most of the time, in the back of a cupboard. This was crucial to me as I aim to design products that take into consideration how and when the users will interact with them. Thus I thrive to create versatile products that adapt to a wide range of environments.
In 2013, the project passed through test phases, with 3D printed models used to check the ergonomics, the volume of water carrying capacity and to do the final analysis of body shape and dimensions.
CHALLENGE: As mentioned previously in the research abstract, the main difficulties in developing this project was to create a product that could be flexible enough to adapt itself to the environment and to different users without its most known primary use.
