DESIGN NAME: Baobab Garden
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Garden
INSPIRATION: The tree keeps coming back in my creations when a customer asks me to realize an event or a sustainable project for him. I wanted to create a particular tree, a tree that would have a history in the heart of a multicultural garden. I have long been fascinated by trees and was inspired by the Baobab, which is meaningful for a lot of people. Namely "Spirit of the forest", "magic tree". The African see in him a benefactor both in the utilitarian sense (medicine, fruit consumption, water tank) and in the ideological sense.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Baobab Garden is a garden conceived between two cultures, the Asian through its garden and the bamboo, and Africa through a symbolic baobab. These two inspirations become entangled to form only one. At the heart of this nature emerges the spirit of the Forest the Baobab. Today, there are only relics of forest completely constituted by Baobab where reigned vast forests. The oppression of the man on forests was never as so strong as it is today, in our eyes of European and by this insight I wanted to restore a little of wisdom into this world.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Baobab Garden was achieved for the outdoor show 'Jardins Jardin'.It can either be contemplative or be a place of relaxation where to walk. It invites to serenity close to plenitude. In the heart of Acer, ferns, moss, Dicksonia it’s an invitation to relaxation, to observation and on reflection of the present moment. The Baobab tree is self supporting and it can be used as a support of plant, a lamp, a bottle holder, a messenger. Its use is without limitless.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was accomplished within 3 months (February to April 2013). It's now permanently exposed at Jardins de Babylone Showroom, the Green Gallery. It was commissioned by the magazine L'Ami des Jardins with branches and garden in June 2013 for the Jardins Jardin show at the Tuileries in Paris for 4 days. At the end of the show, the Baobab Tree returned to showroom Jardins de Babylone.

It's height :3 meters. 140 working hours were necessary to assemble it. Three branches were realized according to branches dried then covered with different sections of bamboo of size stuck the some next to the others. The garden consists of materials and plants of Japanese inspiration as Acer or granite lanterns.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The tree Baobab is 3 meters high and the width of its trunk is of 1,20 meters its widest. Branches rise up to 1,50 meters tops, with a width of 3 meters.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main search was to create a tree exclusively realized in bamboo completely self-supporting, and dismountable so as to transport it easily and quickly. There is no particular difficulty for the achievement of the garden. It is constituted by materials of Japanese inspiration as pebbles and rocks orange Saturne, the granite lanterns, the tsukubai, plans of water and plants as Acer of collection, ferns, bamboo, mosses. A wooden path allows to browse through the garden and to turn around the tree bamboo, central object of the garden.
CHALLENGE: The main difficulty was to have a baobab the surface of which would consist only of bamboo. Several diameters of bamboo sticks were needed to build it. Even if the aspect is uniform outside, the inside is on the contrary fills with a multitude of cuts allowing the interweaving of every sticks the some the others. When dismounted, it emboitable consists of 9 sections allowing to transport it and to dress a post or an ungraceful central element. This technical complexity led us to make it a hand-made and custom-made realization of every totally not producible part in a industrial way.
