DESIGN NAME: Perilous
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sculpture
INSPIRATION: I work with geometric patterns of construction, and draw from both engineering systems of the built environment and more complex forms of organic architecture. Microbiology and the natural world are major sources of inspiration, this work demonstrates my fascination with icosohedral forms of viruses.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: My investigation with glass towers as the basis for innovation is a relatively simple moulding process that facilitates increasing the scale of my sculptures. Colour and form are the major aesthetic considerations in all the work I design and create, and the ability to tailor make my palette range for each project provides great potential architectural application. Permanent transparency and saturation of hue coupled with compressive strength makes the ideal structural material to activate of light in space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Perilous performs as a free standing structure that has permanent saturation of hue with the ability to illuminate, reflect and or refract light. The system of glass blocks can be configured to conform to any space be it internal or external, can be complementary or contrasting, and can be scaled up or down. The material is timeless and sophisticated, with enormous compressive strength that is ideal as a structural architectural component with unparalleled capacity to capture light.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: My project started in April 2012 and was completed in August 2012. It is currently on a national touring exhibition of Australia that commenced in April 2013 and will continue until 2016

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Perilous was generated using AutoCAD to model the design for engineered carbon punch and die moulds.
I melted coloured glass to press cast into glass components before jigging the assembly using glazing strength architectural silicone and PVA gaskets.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I make pressed glass objects with an interest in organic structures for architecture and sculpture. My design tools are CAD and traditional modelling.
I studied early 20th century architectural glass in Europe, and have worked in private studios in USA examining processes and business models, researching colour recipes and historic designs through Corning library.
I applied this research to installations of cast glass relief elements transforming larger internal spaces through colour and light, resulting from my sculptural endeavours.
CHALLENGE: I have a costly studio practice, and finding the right market to support this work in Australia is difficult without the demographic to support such micro business industry is limited. I do not have the option of subcontracting production; my business is unique in this country, production would be cost prohibitive to move off shore unless I secure commissions with appropriate budget. Studio Glass is a relatively recent activity in Australia and in this area I am unusual in wanting to integrate architecture, art and design in the one practice.
