DESIGN NAME: INDIGO Rug

INSPIRATION: When we succeed in prolonging a rug's life for another generation, we have done a great thing. If we have to change it's appearance to make it fashionable again, so be it. Each of these 90 to 100 years old rugs have such a fantastic story to tell. Think about how many generations of families have sat around them and how many important family moments these rugs have been a part of.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The INDIGO rug project was conceived to give old, distressed, and damaged kilim rugs a new lease on life, using both dip dyeing and screen-printing techniques to freshen and modernize these vintage pieces. This is a unique marriage of these two techniques and there are no similar products currently on the market. Old and new, traditional and contemporary are blended in this original product aimed at the modern, progressive buyer. INDIGO represents the new generation of rugs for the new generation consumer.
CHALLENGE: While the surrounding countries like Bosnia & Hercegovina and Serbia have a kilim weaver's history, in Croatia there is no such tradition. Therefore the challenge of this project was the sourcing of the rugs and also the dip dyeing process. Hence, we had to source the rugs from Bosnia & Hercegovina, Turkey, Pakistan and Marocco, while the dip dyeing is done in Turkey. The final stage is designing and screen printing and this is done in Croatia.
