DESIGN NAME: Roman Snap Together Helmet
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poplojik
INSPIRATION: Role play, building systems, flexible structures, shell structures, costume armor.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: One of a series of five classically inspired snap together helmets. Roman arrives packed flat, and with 12 flexible puzzle pieces produces a finished helmet. The building process is fun and intuitive. Components snap together easily, and the model emerges quickly and precisely. It illustrates the transformation of 2D patterns into 3D structures, and demonstrates the structural integrity of the exoskeleton. The simple and appealing design is inspired by the ancient form, and endeavors to invoke the courageous spirit of the past.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The building experience is entertaining and intuitive. Components snap together easily, quickly transforming flat patterns into the iconic structure of the helmet. This metamorphose from 2D into 3D is educational, developing an understanding of the inherent geometry and structure. The components are engineered with precision which ensures a successful building outcome. A sense of achievement is experienced even for the unskilled builder. The imagination is stimulated, inventive play follows.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Poplojik is an ongoing creative project. Started in the UK in 1994 it continues today in the US California. As an investigation into flexible structures, it has become a highly developed building system, which was awarded a US Utility Patent in 2013, and has PCT/EPO patents pending. This method of constructing products from flexible components, has been exhibited in the UK at Tent London Design Week 2011, and in Los Angeles California at the Loop Shows 2012, and 2013. The project continues to develop a wide range of snap together prototypes.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There are three primary fields of inspiration and research: Pattern development in armor construction and costume; from ancient armor, to contemporary Japanese anime robots: Analysis of exoskeletons within nature, including insects, crustaceans, diatoms, and marine protozoa: Geometric structures; from Islamic tessellations to paper engineering.
CHALLENGE: The challenge is to engineer the patterns that create the structural exoskeleton. The result must have simple components, a logical and recognizable construction format, maintain structural integrity, and produce an aesthetic and elegant product. The first paper patterns are inspired experiments cut by hand. Patterns are scanned, computer drafted, followed by many modifications. Paper prototypes are then laser cut and revised many times until finalized prototypes are digitally die cut in polypropylene.
