DESIGN NAME: Electro-Voice ZLX
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Loudspeaker
INSPIRATION: Founded in 1927, Electro-Voice has established a long-running reputation for being at the forefront of professional audio equipment. The design of their products, however, was not reinforcing that story and they were in need of a visual brand language that would effectively communicate the premium sound engineering and ease of use of their line.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design team upgraded the previous incarnation of the speakers with design details to better convey the high-end audio engineering housed within. The sticker logo was replaced with a solid metal badge. To convey the brand's strength, the silhouette was reimagined with a dynamic angularity; the durable enclosure is marked by a brick-like pattern. User experience was also enhanced. Since musicians, DJs, and performers regularly transport and mount their speakers, 3 over-molded handles offer multiple grip positions.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Working closely with the EV engineering team, we developed an optimal interface display and graphic layout to give the user precise control over their sound. Mapping out user actions and considering the most often used functions and settings, we created a user experience that communicates itself intuitively though a simple and logical layout.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design team interviewed pro audio users and store owners in the US and Europe to discover likes and dislikes in the category. The consensus was clear: the best speakers offered precise control over sound without breaking the bank or breaking the user’s back. Amid those practical concerns, there was also an emotional factor: users wanted a speaker that resonated with them visually – a speaker with style as high-quality as their sound that would represent them well as professionals.
CHALLENGE: Guiding the design process were three main factors: professional audio engineering, emotionally engaging style, and user friendliness. A successful end product needed to ensure a balance between those factors. Users would be drawn in by the compelling form, hooked by the sound quality, and become brand loyalists though the well considered features.
