DESIGN NAME: Smartstreets-Cyclepark™
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Transformational bike parking
INSPIRATION: Cities, campuses and other shared spaces often experience problems with random, unauthorized bicycle parking and bicycle theft. Cyclists will lock bikes as close as possible to a destination and will use a sign post, railing or lamp post in the absence of official bike parking facilities. This design improves official bike parking opportunities without adding clutter, by transforming existing sign posts into secure bike parking for two bicycles and stops bikes collapsing into trip hazards.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Smartstreets-Cyclepark is made from two identical sub assemblies which bolt together securely around any size or shape of lamp column or sign post to facilitate secure bike parking either side of street sign posts and lamp posts. It fits in minutes enabling rapid improvement of bike parking facilities across urban areas and other shared spaces such as Univeristy campuses. Made from stainless steel tube it is durable, corrosion resistant and can be RAL colour matched to. The product is fully refurbishable and recyclable. Other versions are available for walls, railings and bollards.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Smartstreets-Cyclepark is intuitive in use as the cyclist quickly understands that the equipment enables them to secure the two wheels and the bike frame to the sign post. This prevents bicycles chained to sign posts being stolen by being lifted off the top and also prevents bicycles from blowing over or slipping down sign posts when knocked top create trip hazards.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Smartstreets-Cycleparks are being deployed across the UK and are favoured by Local Authorities who wish to increase bicycle parking facilities across the street scene quickly by transforming existing infrastructure rather than adding new obstacles on the street. The equipment does not require public consultations prior to installation and is simple and inexpensive to install as the pavement is not disturbed during installation.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design was developed to facilitate production of a wide variety of sizes and configurations of Cyclepark quickly without the need for expensive tooling. The manufacturing process requires tube bending and traditional sheet metal fabrication techniques. This enables very rapid development of new sizes which is important due to the diverse range of post, column, bollard and other street furniture sizes and shapes present in urban areas which the equipment is required to fit to.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Smartstreets consulted with over 200 Councils before finalizing on the optimal feature set. Multiple versions were prototyped and trialed in the design stages to identify the optimal solution for practicality, value for money and aesthetics.
All Smartstreets products are extensively field tested before launch.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to create a product which would install quickly and easily to encourage cycling in urban areas. The objective was to transform existing sign posts and lamp columns to make cities more bicycle friendly by increasing bicycle security without adding clutter to the street scene. The solution needed to be suitable aesthetically for any infrastructure, traditional or contemporary - and had to be capable of being rapidly reconfigured for any size or style of column or bollard to offer a consistent facility
