DESIGN NAME: Coil Lamp
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desk Light
INSPIRATION: The Coil Lamp is the result of Castor Design's ongoing attempts to re-contextualize materials, as well as the studio's desire to address (and reduce) waste. In response to Apple's (then) recent release of the MagSafe 2 laptop adapter, Castor resolved to design a product that would utilize the presumed surplus of first generation MagSafe adapters.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Coil Lamp by Castor Design is constructed of a single piece of machined aluminum, copper base, and custom spring. The lamp is powered by the Apple MagSafe adapter, supplied by the user. A strip of LEDs set into the Coil Lamp's machined aluminum head emits warm directional light, which is partially diffused by an acrylic lens. The head ends in Acme threads, which allows it to screw into the custom spring located at the top of the lamp's copper base.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Coil Lamp is powered using Apple's MagSafe adapter, which may be attached magnetically to the back of the lamp's head. The head itself rotates in either direction along its own axis.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design on the Coil Lamp began in January 2013, and a working prototype was completed for May 2013. The Coil Lamp's initial production run began in August 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Coil Lamp's head has been machined from a single piece of 6061 aluminum rod (1.5 in diameter). A narrow channel has been milled into the lamp's head in order to accommodate a strip of LEDs. A shoulder has also been milled into the head, into which an acrylic lens has been fitted.
The lamp's base is constructed from 0.25 and 0.375 inch diameter mild steel. The top of the base ends in a torsion-style spring. The spring is wound around an acrylic "coil," which is attached to the lamp's head.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: W 195mm x D 330mm x H 340mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research for the Coil Lamp was primarily hands-on. It was our goal to create a lighting-product that would use Apple's MagSafe adapter as a power supply. We began by collecting a wide variety of adapters. Each adapter was paired with a series of lighting technologies to determine which could be powered. In terms of this design's potential impact on the industrial design discipline, we believe that it demonstrates the need to experiment with technologies which are approaching obsolescence.
CHALLENGE: The primary obstacle that we encountered while working on the Coil Lamp was the lack of reference material relating to Apple's MagSafe technology. As one of Apple's proprietary designs, no official documents exists which might have been of any help in dissecting or reverse engineering the adapters. Additionally, there seems to have been few (if any) attempts by hacker and/or DIY communities to use the MagSafe adapters as anything other than a laptop charger.
