| DESIGN NAME: Faceted Tactile Light Series PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lights/ Lumieres INSPIRATION: The Faceted lamp is a tactile and sensory experience of using traditional materials such as brass, copper, bronze German silver and stainless steel. Metal sheets are first cut and then linked together piece by piece meticulously to form a mosaic of repetitive cellular structure that results in to a tessellated geometrical form. The faceted texture creates a scintillating light sculpture not only when it is switched on but also adding visual delight to a space when switched off. The approach was to create something playful enough to introduce curiosity with textures, tempting one to touch it. Light permeates facets where they have been linked and have stretched due to tessellations revealing geometrical lines of construction. Faceted light is a fine example of handcrafted lamps and draws from India’s heritage of exquisite handicrafts. The Faceted Chandelier draws from a modular structure, which allows for the construction of larger structure for public spaces. The Faceted dome lights are based on Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome. The design involves integrating material integrity and longevity using basic construction principles and applications to find new means of expression. Over a period of time the metal develops a natural patina that adds to the natural look and glow of the ambient light. Faceted lights are available in brass, copper, bronze, German silver and stainless steel. NAME: Studio Avni PROFILE: Studio Avni is a multidisciplinary design studio offering bespoke 3D textiles, furniture, lights and products using unconventional materials. Headed by architect and designer Avni, the studio explores a wide spectrum of design innovations through research and tactile manipulation of organic shapes and geometric patterns. Avni Sejpal is a trained architect and a passionate designer, hailing from a textile family and educated at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London with a MA in environmental design (Majors in Furniture, public art & graphics). She has over 8 years experience domestically & internationally in the industry, with stints in the world of Interiors, Fashion and graphic design, she returned to Mumbai, India to open her own studio in 2012. Her style and work is an amalgamation of Architecture fundamentals and textile curiosity. Bold and vivid use of colour, patterns and structural integrity is a constant feature in all her works. The use of vivid and vibrant colours invokes moods and memories to complement tactile qualities. Avni works in an intuitive way with a variety of materials and techniques. She is also curious with the idea of role reversal of materials wherein soft fabrics are so designed to have a structure and form and strong and hard materials such as metal, glass and wood are designed to have a fluid, ephemeral quality. Studio Avni specializes in producing striking textile, metal and Perspex artworks for public spaces, corporate environments, exhibitions and private homes. These can be commissioned directly from the studio. Whether the product is a single piece of sculptural light or a complex and sophisticated textile art screen, design process involves approach for innovativeness, striving to bridge the gap between creativity and execution. Striving to push the expected boundaries of design, Avni welcomes collaboration with architects, interiors and other creative practitioners to create custom pieces and installations such as screens, panels, textile installations, space dividers and illuminated fabric structures etc. for the commercial or conceptual sphere.
