| DESIGN NAME: Saddle Collection by U-Fo® for the Aeron PRIMARY FUNCTION: Aeron Cushion Set INSPIRATION: Charles and Ray Eames work for Herman Miller as well as the original designers of the Aeron: Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick served as inspiration. The design and styling is a nod to modern classics. Treating the chair as a sub-frame it is reminiscent the bent plywood, wire mesh or fiberglass shells of the fifties and sixties. They too had complimentary seat pads. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Saddle Collection is a seat cushion and lumbar pillow upgrade specifically designed for the Aeron Chair by Herman Miller. The collection is designed to make the chair more comfortable and add character. The clean flowing visual transitions were created with unique manufacturing techniques. The "magnetic" Lumbar Support Pillow is free floating! Its magnetic property allows it to be positioned anywhere and will not damage the mesh surface of a chair. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The set is easily connected to the chair. The seat cushion has been custom molded to fit snugly on the seat surface. There are NO straps or hardware required. The material used for the seats underside has enough friction to stay put. The "magnetic" Lumbar Support Pillow is free floating! Hold the lumbar unit against the mesh surface and place the supplied magnetic strap to the other side of the mesh. Its magnetic properties allows it to be positioned anywhere and will not damage the chair. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We developed a unique technique to form leather. With industrial heated hydraulic compression machines and custom milled aluminum tools we developed a technique to form leather. We also poured 2-part polyurethane seats and lumbars. The lumbar unit was a challenge because of its relatively small size and softness. This pushed the boundaries of normal seat foam production. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Seat: 47cm x 10cm x 48cm, Lumbar: 28cm x 19cm x 4cm, width x depth x height TAGS: Aeron Seat cushion, Herman Miller Aeron Lumbar, Aeron seat pad, u-fo aeron seat cushion, u-fo herman miller Aeron lumbar pillow RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After reading reviews and with personal experience, we realized areas of the Herman Miller Aeron chair could use updating. We focused on enhancing ergonomics and creating a luxury upgrade product. We used white scanning to get accurate 3d models of the Aeron's surfaces. This served as a platform to develop 3d models of our seat cushions. For visualization we output scale 3d models. Large full size molds were made with 3d printers and traditional methods to test our forms for fit and comfort. CHALLENGE: Our leather forming technique required working with 3 different production facilities to get the process developed. It took working with 4 manufacturing facilities to make the poured foam lumbar before finding one whos equipment could meet the challenge.
