DESIGN NAME: LeLoo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Plunger/Brush/Magazine Rack
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the need to subtract the ugly, unsanitary, and disorganized.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: LeLoo creates a new way of looking at your bathroom and some of its essential pieces. People transform their bathrooms into the jewels of their home, adorning the space with beautiful stone, doors of glass, hardwood vanities, and sculptural plumbing fixtures, yet more often than not, the plunger, brush and stacks of magazines spoil the space.
LeLoo transforms the eyesores of the bathroom into a new centerpiece where organization and utility thrive.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With a finger pull on the cap, the top lifts off and the plunger or brush slide off the metal rack from the backside.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project begain in February 2013 and I am still working out the production details now in September 2013. All design and prototyping took place at my shop in San Diego, California.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main goal was to maintain a very small footprint as to minimize space used in the frequently small bathrooms. Additionally, a key to this design was to completely hide the plunger and brush. With this in mind, the triangle became the general shape, allowing just enough room at the base for the wide ends, and a nice narrow top to create a sense of space. To blend in with most bathrooms, a white acylic base was selected and it is complimented with the natural tones of white oak on the cap.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 8.5" wide x 19" tall x 10.5" deep - White body is made of a white acrylic with mitered corners and the top is white oak end caps with white oak veneer. On the interior, the hanging element is made of 3/16" steel dowel. The plunger and brush are made of doug fir wood dowels.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In doing my research on plungers and brushes, I noticed a few sleek designs for plungers/brushes, but you were still staring at a plunger and brush. No one was offering a design that actually complemented the beautiful bathrooms that people create. To further the challenge and add to the less is more in the bathroom, the idea of this design functioning as a minimal magazine rack became essential, a rack that would only allow 1-2 magazines without room for stacks to accumulate. Together, these ideas created the basic framework for the design of LeLoo.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging element to this design was keeping things small while still allowing for functionality. The height and width are critical to this design. It took a while to find a plunger height that was functional while still minimizing the overall size of the design. This also played into the materials where I minimized interior thickness so I could get every 1/8" out of the height. I ultimately decided on a plunger height of 16", on the low side but still very functional and keeps the body of the design small and unobtrusive to the space.
