PRIMARY FUNCTION: Personnel scanner
INSPIRATION: Visual and functional inspiration for the scanner was derived through investigations of many areas such as modern airports that embrace new technology like Schiphol and Berlin Brandenburg Airports.The team referenced medical devices such as CT and MRI scanners which present non threatening forms and color language as well as passenger's concerns regarding visibility and personal privacy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The body scanner is simple for the traveler and security person. Clean forms, large windows and good illumination reduce discomfort. Interface indicates targets using a generic human graphic not an image of the body. Scanner fits through standard doorways and installs quickly in small spaces. The visual language can extend across product lines to support the client brand. Consideration given to all user groups and touch points makes this device successful and unique.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The operation begins with the security person calling a traveler to enter the scanner. The traveler enters the unit and the security person selects the scan function on the touchscreen and the antenna moves through its range of motion. The display indicates with a mannequin if any threats are found and where on the body. The person exits immediately upon completion of the scan. The process takes approximately 1.5 seconds.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design process of the product started in summer of 2012 and was finished in October 2012. The project was started and completed in Ronkonkoma, New York, USA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design allows ease of manufacture using a steel framework to support mechanism, skins and windows.Single manufactured assemblies replace multiple parts.Components are arranged in space saving orientations to reduce volume. Design allows self-alignment upon assembly. FRP is used for durability, finish and cost. The design was checked by FEA for performance, cost and final aesthetic. A prototype was assembled to study and make improvements.The final design was validated at a testing lab.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our study was to understand the future of security. We needed to provide a solution that melded the needs of our user groups. The method was to query the potential users and employ a system based approach to ensure a balanced view was used throughout the project. The study focused on the perceptions of the user groups affected. Our results were an unobtrusive design, safe active millimeter wave-technology, reduce total cost of ownership, improve system performance, and improved user-experience.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to obtain excellent performance and aesthetics along with desired cost compactness and a balance that served all of the user group needs. The project was on an aggressive timeline to get to market on time. The design's compactness was difficult challenge but using the steel frame structure manufacture was simplified and installation in small spaces was improved due to the modular design which allows access to small spaces.
