DESIGN NAME: Leaf
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pleasure Boat (Yacht)
INSPIRATION: The elegant design is inspired by nature and more precisely the leaf. The image of a drifting leaf guided us through the design activity. Its lightness, color, transparency to light and organic structure were a constant source of inspiration. The transparent boat hull shows off the bio-inspired skeleton composed of a main midrib, blades and veins.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Leaf is part of a new simple boat generation. Its innovative design, high performance and use of renewable energy make navigation a real pleasure for everyone. Leaf has the ideal size for an adventurous boat trip with family and friends. The electric boat is steered via an i-pad. A solar textile over the starboard console provides the energy. Leafs easy navigation system is a new experience worth to try!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The boat wishes to create an interaction with the natural environment. It gives really different point of views on horizon thanks to the transparent hull.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2012 in Paris. A collaboration with Am Yacht (http://www.amyacht.it/) is considered to produce a limited edition of boats (about ten).
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The transparent boat hull is made of red-tinted methyl methacrylate to show off the wooden structure. Teak wood is also used for the deck covering, starboard console, seating and sunning area. Storage compartments are integrated under the comfortable furniture. There is enough place for the minimum required safety equipment (personal lifesaving appliances, visual signals, vessel safety, navigation equipment, firefighting equipment), an integrated music/stereo system, a food safe and a mini bar. There is everything you need to fully enjoy your boat trip!

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We studied nature, the anatomy and properties of leaves. We made different buoyancy experiments and models with leaves, wood and cardboard. Our goal was to be as close as possible to the plants structure. You immediately have to understand the source of inspiration.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to find the appropriate materials to get the intended result. The chosen materials for the transparent hull are innovative and rely on the development of new technologies.
