DESIGN NAME: Tootsie
PRIMARY FUNCTION: iPad Folio
INSPIRATION: Papernomad originated from the idea of designing and manufacturing environmentally friendly paperboard furniture as a promotional vehicle for open-air events: bio-degradable beanbags made of paper and filled with popcorn. With technical support from a leading Austrian company, we developed an organic paper composite, which is the basis of all our products. This tear and water resistant sandwich exhibited such great properties, that we did not want to confine it's use to furniture. We set out on a quest for industrial niches where traditional materials could be replaced by our paper composite.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tootsie meets the needs of modern nomads.
This folio for the iPad is plain but affecting, soothingly analogue and ecologically elaborated. It is made from organic materials, it is tear- and water-resistant and biodegradable.
The life-expectancy of today’s electronic devices is rarely more than a couple of years. Why protect them with plastic covers that will likely outlive the device by decades? Papernomads are made from a patented paper composite - comprised of several layers of paper and a bio-polymer membrane - combined with cotton-padding, wool-felt-lining and a pull-strap made from linen. When it’s time to upgrade an electronic device, the protective sleeve can be reused. If the relationship with an electronic device has expired, the protective case can be composted.
Tootsie leaves a lasting impression on people's minds but none on the environment.
Most of us live and travel through a world of constant change - a world that we are at risk of losing ourselves in. Paper is the perfect analogue counterbalance to a glass and plastic digital world that surrounds us. Why not use paper to make products that capture our experiences as quick scribbles, coffee stains, finger prints, telephone numbers or the occasional lipstick impression. Not unlike a diary, Papernomads document our experiences and create reference points in time for us to remember who we are.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This iPad folio case is made of a patented paper composite which can be doodled on, written on, dreamed on. Crayons, ink, coffee stains, lipstick, pencil, everything you use to make your mark on the world can also leave your mark on your Papernomad. It is lined with wool felt made by happy Australian sheep and features a natural hemp strap with magnetic latch to keep the folio closed.
There is no plastic shell to cover the edges of the iPad, just two latches and a strip of small magnets to provide a secure catch for the device. It takes half a second to assemble or to remove the iPad from its cover.
One belt, two functions: Tootsie's hemp belt attaches to a magnet in the lid to hold the folio shut - when the lid is folded backwards and the belt pulled over it, a second magnet inside the lid enabled the folio to form a stand for the iPad.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: In autumn 2012 we celebrated our partnership with our American friend Mark at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge in Nashville. He pushed us to develop something we had not considered possible using our paper, but it worked: our new folio for the iPad. In spring 2013 we began with various iterations and prototype reviews until the final prototype was approved in July this year. Production commenced in August and continues.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Our folio case is the result of 8 months development which began with the request for a simple iPad folio case. Papernomad products do not utilize fossil polymers and therefore require an elaborate redesign of the product's functional components. The parts of a folio that are usually made from plastics have been replaced with paper, hemp and magnets. The first innovative step was the development of a tear- and water-resistant and bio-degradable paper composite which dates back to 2011. Two more innovative steps were necessary to improve the folio's functionality while avoiding the use of plastics: a new mechanism to secure the device inside the folio case and a new way to fix the lid of the folio to form a rigid stand.
