DESIGN NAME: Nessie, a monster of rock.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Urban Bench
INSPIRATION: The concept idea behind this project was to totally change the common perception of "urban bench", using one basic element as a starting point for more complex set-ups, in respect to the existing infra-structures of the city. So, "just drop & forget" installation method was introduced. Self-exploration on curved fluid concrete forms was the starting point to introduce Nessie, a monster of rock. Oh yeah.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Based n a concept idea of "Drop & Forget", that is, easy on site installation, Robust concrete design along with the possibility to have different set-up based on the population of the basic unit.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Carefully balanced curves are providing a comfortable seating experience. Different population and positioning of the basic unit element, combinations of two or three units benches can occur.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2009 and finished around June 2010.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Reinforced cast stone, using specific mold made of polyester reinforced with glass fiber and metallic chassis that ensures the geometrical stability of the workpiece during the manufacturing process. Concrete reinforcing with galvanized steel B-500s in a minimum amount of 30kg/m3. Finished surface is softly acid etched treated and waterproofed.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Seating Level: Height = 390 mm.
Single unit dimensions: Width mm x Depth mm x Height mm = 2870 mm x 1120 mm x 885 mm.
Two Units Composition: Width mm x Depth mm x Height mm = 3580 mm x 1120 mm x 885 mm.
Three Units Composition: Width mm x Depth mm x Height mm = 3210 mm x 3040 mm x 885 mm.
Inscribed in a radii of 1840mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to redefine the common perception of the "urban bench" object, in respect to the existing infra-structure of the urban environment, minimize installation costs, create an object that last long, and be able to change it's overall form by re-positioning it's basic unit-element..
