DESIGN NAME: 180º North East
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Novel
INSPIRATION: This project was inspired by the thought that my future grandchildren would one day be able to read about what for me, was an exciting and important part of my life. As for the presentation of the book, I was inspired by music albums and artists I enjoy, including Pink Floyd. I liked how they varied in style throughout a whole album and yet kept it as one coherent piece.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "180º North East" is a 90,000 word adventure novel. It tells the true story of a journey Daniel Kutcher made through Australia, Asia, Canada and Scandinavia in the fall of 2009 when he was 24. Aside from the main body of the story there are photos, maps, expressive text and video (depending on the version) throughout the book in an attempt to immerse the reader in the adventure. This way the reader can get a better sense of what a journey like this might be like as well as what the author's own personal experience of it was.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The book has been designed so that it can be read as a printed piece as well as on most modern day platforms, including tablets and kindles. If reading the printed version of the book, at some points the reader will have to turn the book around or upside to continue reading. The tablet version includes videoclips of the trip, so that the reader would be able to see more visuals of a place I was visiting.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project was started in March of 2010 in Alkmaar, The Netherlands. It was finished with a first prototype copy printed in Madrid, Spain in December 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I used a variety of programs to create the book. Microsoft Word was used to write the text of the story. For image processing and design, I used a mix of tools from the Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and Premiere. This is further explained in the attached PDF document.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensiones: 160mm x 28mm x 231mm. Weight: 697g. Pages: 326. Words: 90,000.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For the text of the book, my research included revising all the memories, notes, photos, maps, receipts, travel tickets and videos I had made while travelling and shape them into a narrative piece. Then for the instances of expressive text, I researched into mathematical shapes as well as other elements that I based certain instances on. This is further explained in the attached PDF document.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of creating this book was developing and designing the instances of expressive text as I had no idea how to create them. It was only through a lot of trial and error that I found ways to express what I wanted to express properly and translate the effects that I had sketched on paper into the actual book ready for print. This is further explained in the attached PDF document.
