DESIGN NAME: Wash-it
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sustainable washing unit
INSPIRATION: Excessive water consumption has been a serious problem and considered by numerous institutions and organizations all over the world. We did some research to find some quantitative data about this problem and found that a person uses approximately 150 liters of water for a 15 minute shower, 12 liters for flushing the toilet (in a day), 3 liters for washing hands (in a day), and 38 liters for using washing machine (every week). The water used is mostly by showering and this grabbed our attention to that particular activity. We analyzed the showering activity, tried to understand the reasons behind the use of that amount of water and tried to find an answer to the question: “How can we encourage people to use less water while showering?”.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Wash-it is a sustainable washing unit concept which integrates the showering and clothes-washing activities in order to filter and reuse the water. Therefore, Wash-it enables users to wash their clothing while showering. Every time the users take a shower, they will have an opportunity to wash their clothing without using any extra water.
Wash-it offers a second design solution specially for public usage. Public Wash-it has the ability to refresh clothes with Air-wash technology. Thus, users may take their cleaned clothing back quickly, without bad odors and sweat.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: For the domestic Wash-it: The user puts the clothes into the washing machine and select the desired program, then starts the process. He/she enters the shower cabinet. While he/she is taking a shower the used water is cleaned by the filters and collected in the storage tank. The washing machine uses the cleaned water from the water tank. After the shower the user takes his/her cleaned clothing back.
For the public Wash-it: The user enters the shower cabinet. Having the privacy, he/she takes off his/her clothing and puts them into the washing machine. Then, he/she selects the desired program and starts the process. During the shower, the used water is cleaned by the filters and collected in the storage tank. The filtered water waits to be used for the next shower. During the shower, the washing machine removes the bad odor and sweat from the clothes by using the Airwash technology. After the shower, the user takes his/her refreshed clothing back and put them on.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2011 in Ankara and finished in December 2011.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Main acrylic (PMMA) body parts can be produced separately by thermoforming, then joined together with the help of snap fits and mechanical joints. The part that holds inner elements can be disassembled for maintenance.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Wash-it has a closed plumbing system with 2 water pumps, 3 filters (carbon, organic and chemical), one UV cleaning phase, one heater and a water storage unit. While the user is having a shower, Wash-it gathers gray water from shower cabinet, passing it through the filters and the UV unit and sends the water to the storage unit. So all the water in storage is clean and ready to be used again either for showering or washing clothes.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: individual and group interviews, field studies, visiting various houses and collecting information of daily bathroom routines and quantitative data on water consumption. Scenario based thinking, defining the gaps beneath the routines,
interviews with housewives, collecting data about washing machine cycle,
participatory design workshop with different user groups in the design studio to enrich the ideas and evaluate them together.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to reduce the water waste in bathroom. The water is wasted mostly by showering, which means this particular activity has to be reconfigured in order to save water. On the other hand, a nice calm shower is relaxing for the people. Limiting this pleasure wouldn't be a good solution. So the result should fit users’ life easily, without limiting anything about that activity, but adding a value to that. That was the real challenge.
