| DESIGN NAME: Crystal science exhibition center PRIMARY FUNCTION: Enrich the cultural life of the public. INSPIRATION: The inspiration is from the nature of the shadow changes and Chinese ancient literature. According to the natural sunlight into the show，the nature and the elements combined display content. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Transform an old square with a history of more than 30 years into an exhibition center of “Crystal Science Knowledge” and “Crystal Handicraft Display” for the public to visit, to improve the cultural image of the crystal processing industry of this region and enrich the cultural life of the public. This project consists of an outdoor public square covering 1,100 m2 and a streamlined indoor display area. The design team, inspired by “how to display time (history) visually”, has combined "city", "natural", "culture", "history", and many other factors. The image of “sundial” of the old square is retained on the outdoor square to carry on the history memory that the residents have for this area (sundial is a device of the ancient China to tell time by the length and direction of the shadow cast by the sun on the dial) and, forms the concept of “time dial” together with the surrounding ground by being the center of field of vision. The public can learn the development and changes brought by the “crystal industry” to this area through the “sculpture” and “model” on the corresponding point. A rolling streamline building is set up around the square by making use of the original slope topography as a platform for the public to rest, play and enjoy the view. The indoor display space is divided into three areas – “the formation process of crystal”, “the processing technology of crystal” and “the industrial development of crystal”. The designers have created three different scene forms and linked them together by a continuous videotape, so visitors may watch the film on the glass screen while walking. The whole process makes one feel like entering a world of crystal stories and the visitors are a part of it.
