| DESIGN NAME: Urban Weather Station PRIMARY FUNCTION: Weather Station INSPIRATION: The initial idea was to work with a small technological cube. But the design was finally chosen from the perspective of a better fitting theme regarding the atmosphere and the weather. In the end, the proposition was a cylindrical form that matches the shape of meteorological instruments like the thermometer, for example, which «reaches for the sky». The illuminating slot gives the object a first impression that is subtle and universal. This slot has a dual function: it lets the air enter and spreads a warm or cold light, depending on the indicated air quality. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The product is an important innovation in the domain of Personal Weather Stations. The Weather Station's interface is transformed and embodied in the user's Smartphone (iPhone, iPad, Android device) application. This is a total break-away from the traditional Personal Weather Station concept, which usually includes the classic LCD screen or buttons for the selection of specific functions. Liberated from the classic concept, the 'Weather Station' device can be totally re-thought, and it can be given a new fundamental and innovative design. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is the first personal Weather Station that is app enabled with web connection capabilities. Users can monitor their Weather Station from one or more smartphones, and connect to one or more stations from one smartphone. The fact that each personal Weather Station is connected to the Internet means that users are creating a vast online network of weather sensors. The Netatmo Weather Station has created the first hardware based, weather and climate monitoring network with live crowd sourced data. It is also first connected object that users can share with family, friends and the world. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2011 and has been commercialized in September 2012. It is now distributed in more than 75 countries. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Personal Weather Station is a digital revolution. It is a widely distributed and useful product. It completely redefines the traditional device. Its innovative connected technology permits direct communicate with the user's Smartphone. The Urban Weather Stations consists of a single piece of durable aluminum shell, UV-resistant and ABS plastic. It includes a temperature sensor (indoor and outdoor), a humidity (indoor and outdoor) sensor, a barometer, a CO2 (indoor) meter and a sound meter (indoor) to monitor the users noise pollution exposure. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of the outdoor module are: 1.8x1.8x6 inches and of the indoor module: 1.8x1.8x4.1 inches. The weight of the outdoor module is 135 grams and the weight of the indoor module is 193 grams. The Netatmo Station is Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n compatible (2.4GHz). And the wireless connection works between modules : 915MHz or 868MHz long range 100m. The stations' API allows user to integrate stations data into his home automation system and control ventilation and heating. The cloud data storage is unlimited and available on multiple devices.
