DESIGN NAME: Niko
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rotating Planes
INSPIRATION: This project was inspired by the need to create, in an environment of only 32 square meters, an dining area that does not constitute a permanent bulk to leave adequate space for circulation and to guarantee anyone full freedom of movement
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This structure consists of two rotating planes positioned on a supporting suspended element in the form of a triangular section fixed to the wall or to an eventual movable support. The planes thanks to a rotation form a table. It is a dynamic structure because occupying a surface like an industrially produced table, thanks to another rotation of the two planes, the bulk is immediately eliminate. At the same time it is also a versatile and multifunctional because it lends itself to various applications.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This table does not have the feet and does not constitute a permanent bulk thanks to the rotation of the two planes. It is a multifunctional object because it is capable of satisfying very different needs depending on the use that is required. In fact, by varying the dimensions and the height, it can be used in various applications, such as a table, a work bench, a double bed, a bedside table, etc.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design of structure began in 2000 in Salerno and lasted for a month. The first prototype is located in Naples in an apartment and the second prototype is located in Salerno in the store of Tisseranderie Arredamenti.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The rotating planes present a longitudinal cut, with thickness that goes gradually reducing itself and a semicircular cut to an extremity. The suspended support element is presented has triangular shape. The structure can be made in all material resistant to flexure. In particular it can be made of wood, iron and plastic. The techniques of realization may be to mold, craft as the prototypes in photos or for extrusion thanks to the modern 3d laser machines.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Prototype as seen in the drawings and the renderings:
the rotating planes have respectively a length of 120 cm and a width of 40 cm; the base of suspended support element is 80 cm in lenght, 40 cm in width, 50 cm in height; the strip for closing has a length of 80 cm and a thickness of 3 cm. The size of the structure can vary widely because the object lends itself to endless applications.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The study that led to realization of this object in based on the need to find a solution for a very small environment that needs a dining room. A table of the industrial production would be a not pratical solution since it would not leave enough space for circulation. During the project came the intuition on the possibility to create a table without feet resting on a cantilever support of triangular shape.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to create a dynamic structure without standing and stimulate an idea of application in the viewer rather than suggest it.
