| DESIGN NAME: Mowraj Seat PRIMARY FUNCTION: Two Seater INSPIRATION: The human history is rich with countless entities, that could be transformed into artistic master pieces .No matter how grotesque the usable items in these fields are, a creative eye can derive beauty and art from it . The "Mowraj" is an embodiment of deriving characteristic pieces from our rich culture and a reincarnation of a crude machine that was used thousands of years ago into an artistic piece used in our modern sleek, refined interiors by sculpturing it with a Gothic influence that compliments its mystic structure and look. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Mowraj is a two-seater designed to embody the spirit of ethnic Egyptian and modern Gothic styles. Its form was derived from the Nowrag, the Egyptian version of the threshing sledge altered to embody the Gothic flair without compromising its ethnic antediluvian essence. It is black lacquered featuring ethnic Egyptian handcrafted engravings on both arms and legs as well as rich velvet upholstery accessorized with bolts and pull rings giving it a medieval thrown like Gothic appearance. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This piece a two-seater with built-in drawers that open up to being used as poufs to rest one's feet without altering the original essence of the design. It's a modernized replica of the feet stool used in the historical " Threshing sledge " to protect the feet of the farmers from being cut by the threshing blades or flints. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The concept initiated in Aug. 2012, progression of design was in phases till Nov. 2012 before production started. Several trials were made in the study of proportions and materials in the process to evolve to its final form in Dec. 2012. The piece was manufactured and handcrafted manually in a carpentry shop in Old Cairo under continuous round the clock inspection and quality control, as for the metal accessories, where manually casted in a blacksmith's workshop in Old Cairo. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: "Mowraj" a two-seater with built-in ottomans in a drawer resemblance with soft close drawer runner and "Tip on" mechanisms by Blum that facilitates the opening and closing of these poufs by a simple push. To achieve the High gloss lacquer finish, a base coat sealer is applied ,5 layers of 2k Acrylic Polyurethane are applied then a 1200 grit sand paper is used to smooth-en the surface, buffing compounds are rubbed in every stage. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The body is made of solid white beech wood. It has been painted in glossy Black lacquer as well as the possibility of custom paintings such as ash Champagne and brushed silver. There is also availability of Oak or Elm Burl veneer finishes. Upholstery is from glamorous velvet available in several colors. Bolts and ring-pulls are casted from galvanized iron with a variation of finishing from shiny silver to matt rustic gray. The Gothic like piece of machinery caught my attention strong enough to purchase it and research its history and origins. We also researched the ethnic Egyptian ornaments and Gothic furniture styles. A mock up was prepared to evaluate every detail to include dimensions, proportions, durability and aesthetics. CHALLENGE: It's never a simple mission to create a furniture piece derived from an extinct agricultural machinery that lacks aesthetic features as well as a strong diverse functionality as a posh two-seater. Second in execution the persistence to reintroduce wood hand craftsmanship in a time where commercial mass production is internationally common is far from an easy assignment. To succeed in achieving the balance and affordable pricing as well as reasonable production time is arduous. She has been a lifelong advocate of the ancient Master Builder approach to construction where the architect was responsible for the entire project from concept, design through to construction and handover. Following in the tradition of the Master Builder, Dalia Sadany developed a group of partnerships operating under the umbrella of Dezines and management of Dalia Sadany providing full service Design-Build turnkey solutions to residential and commercial clients. The group consists of Dezines a design house providing architecture, interior design & landscaping design services; DECON a general contractor specialized in high-end interior finishing; and GUSH a bespoke custom furniture designer and producer.
