| DESIGN NAME: Mekanno PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: A childhood memory revisited: Meccano, the model construction system invented by Frank Hornby. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The enlarged metal strips, scaled up from 1/2" to 40mm, provided two isostatic side frame structures; the side frames are connected by threaded steel rods covered with high density foam upholstered in nappa leather. Wood is used to assure transverse rigidity; the hawthorn was selected for its yellowish colour and traditional use in fine woodworking. Green and red were the basic Meccano colours up to the mid sixties. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Cushion rolls are particularly suited to active sitting. The backrest rolls are leveled to assure a healthy sitting posture. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2008 with a first prototype and was completed in 2012. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Frame - lacquered aluminium and polished hawthorn wood. Seat cushion rolls - high density polyethylene foam and nappa leather over threaded steel rods. Stainless steel bolts and nuts. Alternative materials include plain anodised aluminium, synthetic leather and plywood. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Overall dimensions 500mm x 460mm x 770mm. Aluminium strips (section 40mm x 2mm with perforated 13 mm diameter holes) and tubes (14mm diameter). Stainless steel M12 threaded rods and M12 cap nuts DIN1587. Polyethylene pipe insulation foam 1/2" nominal 3/4" wall. Solid hawthorn wood. TAGS: Meccano, aluminium, hawthorn wood RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Using metal strips to create a rigid chair frame required an experimental approach, by successive improved prototypes. The insertion of an additional material, solid wood, proved to be the best solution, keeping the design simple and providing additional confort to the chair armrests. CHALLENGE: A simple concept using materials that can be easily found in any DIY store. A very basic approach to supply and manufacture of the three main components: metal strips, cushion rolls in high density insulation foam and wood reinforcements.
