DESIGN NAME: Heron
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Adjustable lighting fixture
INSPIRATION: I mostly get my inspiration from mechanical and technical constructions I come across. Integrating forces which are being generated by frixtion and gravity makes designing more complex but much more exciting.
The form of my designs is always a consequence of the used technique. Parallel, the design makes me think abouth a heron.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Depending the shaped position, this lamp can lighten wall-, up- or downside.
It can reach out to abouth 250 cm, but has in his smallest position less than 20 cm to the wall. The elements of this design are equipped with a hole. Through this hole all the components are held by a rod which is fitted at the ends of screw thread. This allows the whole to be clamped, leaving a certain friction between the different elements.
Touching the tube dimms the light.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The fixture has 4 hinges. The first is, at its connection point on the wall, horizontally 180, the second vertically 200 and the third 360 degrees swivel in the same plane as the second. The fourth hinge is placed in the way the ledprofile is clamped in the third hinge. It is 360 degrees swivel. The heron is a ligting fixture by which you can lighten every corner of the room. The dimfunction allows to use the lamp as a reading lamp or to give the room a cosy atmosphere but the Heron also is perfect to use as the main lightening.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This design is part of the FFFF&O line (Form Follows Function Furniture and Objects). I am working on this for abouth 6 months. In this line I designed a chair, a table, an outside bench and this lamp. It has never been shown yet.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The lamp is made out of oak, oak plywood, aluminium, metal, pmma/aluminium ledtubeprofile, leather, inox bolts, polyester balls and some electronical components. All produced in my own studio.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width: 100 mm (fixing point to the wall)
Depth: 2500 mm (horizontal position); 200 mm (vertical position)
Height: 1500 mm (vertical position), 180 mm (fixing point to the wall; horizontal position)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The technique of this design alludes to the force of friction. By using leather joints between the elements the position can be clamped. It is not necessairy to lose and to fasten the hinge every time, but the hinge has to be clamped more in some positions, depending the needed force. Clamping the hinge is easy just by turning the balls or the bolts in the right direction using your hands or a stick.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult part was creating a simple design with a large force on the hinges. I had to search for the proportions in which the design could capture the weight of the elements. The lighter the elements, the smaller the design could become. I stranded on the limit regarding the strength of the whole. The result is a lighting fixture which you can place in any wanted position and which can lighten any corner of the room.
