DESIGN NAME: Real Boy
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Push Pins / Thumb Tacks
INSPIRATION: The Design:
All Shotton’s products are designed to make people smile and be happy. In this case he used a witty play on Pinocchio’s long nose to create an adorable, yet refined push pin character.
The Project:
Shotton moved to Tokyo in July 2012 and planned to exhibit and sell his works with Designboom Mart during Tokyo Designers week in October.
He had first joined the Mart team the previous year, during Stockholm Furniture and Lighting fair, Sweden. There, he launched his first product “Cloud Keyholder” – 150 hand-cast, wall-mounted clouds that use hidden magnets underneath to store your keys like rain.
The cloud is now mass-manufactured, but un-content with exhibiting the same product again, Shotton was inspired to produce a new product. In less than 8 weeks, he took what was only a sketch on a piece of paper to the first 200 packs, handpainted and ready to sell and exhibit at the Mart. He sold out, and now continues to sell them exclusively on his online store.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pinocchio-inspired push pins designed and manufactured by young British designer Duncan Shotton.
Injection-moulded in white in the UK, the pins are then hand painted to exquisite detail by Shotton himself in his recently established Tokyo Studio.
Each of the beautifully packaged, x 1000 limited-edition packs of two has it's own serial number, is sold exclusively online and comes with a signed thank you note.
-An example of how the application of design and fine craftsmanship can transform such a standard, accepted stationary product into an object of desire.
