PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hi-Fi turntable
INSPIRATION: First; as a reference to the purpose of this sound re-creating product this design is inspired by the sound itself. It is about how sound could be perceived and represented in a 3 dimensional space. Therefore it is inspired by lots of physics specially the graphical representations of how sound travels and how sound behaves.
Second; as a reference to the golden age of high fidelity (50s and 60s) and the incredible technical passion of these devices this product is inspired by, the mid-century futurism.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The ultimate goal of a hi-fi turn table is to re-create the purest and uncontaminated of sounds; this essence of sound is both the terminus and the concept of this design. This beautify crafted product is a sculpture of sound which reproduces sound. As a turntable it is among one of the best performing hi–fi turntables available and this unparalleled performance is both indicated and amplified by its unique form and design aspects; joining form and function in a spiritual union to embody the Calliope turntable.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The control unit enables the user to turn the product on/off, to choose between 33.3 and 45 rpm, to fine tune the turning speed and give the user instant rpm data. The shape with four circles on the control unit is also the logo of the producer company and the on/off button is at the center of this logo. This button is made to be invisible for someone who is not familiar with the product signifying that it is a very personal and a delicate product. Surrounding the logo there are three knobs, the knob at the top is the rpm selector choosing between 33.3 or 45 rpm. The others are for fine tuning. Finally there is a black screen in front of the control unit which shows the current rpm of the platter.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started on March 2008 at the time it was my graduation project from University. The first prototype was very rough but I was still able to graduate with it. Then some time on mid 2010 I build an improved version of the turntable for myself, keeping in mind that it might turn in to a product one day. After receiving very positive feedbacks from some audio critics I decided to build a final improved version of the turntable on June 2011. Completely redesigning the turntable, making numerous acoustic tests, finding correct components, optimizing quality of the production on numerous workshops in France and Turkey and finally assembling all the pieces together took me more than seventeen months.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This product consists of approximately 160 pieces - components blending in together. Wooden pieces are from hard wood, mirror finish surfaces are from brass and semi mate black pieces are from stainless steel, these choices are made due to the acoustic capabilities of these materials ensuring better audio performance. Almost every component is either C.N.C milled or lathed. Casting was not an option for metal components, due to low production volumes.
Wooden pieces are later, infused with a blend of mineral oils under vacuum for preventing the wood from cracking and turning. Then these pieces are sanded fallowed by acrylic spray painting and polishing.
Metal components are first sent to, internal stress relief for standardizing the acoustic signature of the product and once they are milled the brass components are polished fallowed by chrome plating. Steel components are spray painted to semi mate black
The screen on the control unit is from casted polyester via silicon mold under vacuum to prevent bubbles and to obtain a high gloss surface. The rest of the components such as screws, motor controller, rotating switches, damping materials, synthetic ruby ball bearings etc. are available on the market
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This is a highly customizable product and the submitted turntable is the standard version, but according to the customer’s taste, there is a wide variety of materials and finishes available
The engine housing is 145 X 290 X 125 mms, 5 kilograms.
The control unit is 255 X 355 X 100mms, 9 kilograms.
The mail body is 490 X 445 X 143mms, 48 kilograms.
The product either works with 120V or 240V different plug standards are also available.
There turntable supports SME and Rega mouth tone arms between 7 to 10 inch mounting distances.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The objective of our research was to minimize the unwanted vibration by isolating and damping it. Common methods like, separating the engine from the main body, placing the turntable over ball bearings for minimal ground contact, dynamically balancing the platter for stability and using multiple damping layers trough the construction were applied but it was still not enough. Then for the first time in a turntable project using a finite element simulation software we were able to see the resonance frequency of a component and relate this frequency with its form. Using this technique the form of the turntable was optimized to minimize its resonance frequency there for help damping the unwanted vibrations. This data was backed up with real life measurements and fine-tuned; the result is an average of 38% decrease in the resonance frequencies and increase in damping capability which finally meant contribution the sound quality of the product.
CHALLENGE: Once I had the sound wave idea the engine housing and the main body practically build them self’s and they evolved greatly in technical aspects during prototypes but the control unit has always been a major problem. At my graduation presentation there was no control unit at all, there was just a bulk of electronic equipment because I had no time to design it on time and since then the control unit is entirely different on every prototype. The engine housing and the main body are connected visually they compete each other and for the turntable to operate properly they have to stand together but in the case of the control unit it visually needs to be a part of this design but it also has to be a completely standalone unit achieving this 4 years after drawing the other components was very difficult.
