| DESIGN NAME: Catena PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table INSPIRATION: The almost standard rectangular shape of coffee tables inspired me to create an L-shaped coffee table which is comfortable to have some snack on the table while sitting on the floor. I have been also inspired by an aesthetic figure, a rectangle with circular edges, on a wallpaper and I used it as the basic shape of each part. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A coffee table consisted of four side tables. The unusual placement of side tables composes the L shape of the coffee table, which is an original form for coffee tables. The load bearing elements of each side table is formed, by using different combination of the same shape. This simple shape, a rectangle with circular edge, is also the form of each side of the coffee table, so the form of each side table and cofee table is different but related. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There are four side tables separately: two short and two large. The three of these four tables have been designed as “wheeled-tables” to facilitate the movement easily. The fourth side table which is one of the two short ones is a “wheel-less table”. There is no extra mechanism to transform side tables into a coffee table; it needs no extra effort to use them as coffee or side table. In order to obtain a coffee table, the large side tables should be put side by side. The wheel-less side table should be placed in one of the preferred large side tables, and the remaining ones should be placed completing L-shape. The short side table with wheel has a flanged bottom under it, which should be inserted under the bottom of the second short side table, to support it when it is inside the large side table. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All parts of the table is wood and manufactured by hand. The corners of the table are manufactured by using flexible plywood. Two different size molds are used to produce the corners.
