| DESIGN NAME: Swan Bath PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional bath complex INSPIRATION: I am inspired by the swans for their esthetic curling lines . The cylindrical column is inspired from the body and the curved plates from the neck and the wings of the swan. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Separate bathroom elements namely; toilette, sink, shower and towel hanging are gathered around a cylindrical column instead of placing these elements on different walls.The cylindrical column carries different bathroom elements on curling blocks and it also serves a cover for the water pipes and drainage pipes inside. This design has the advantage of being useful in bathrooms with different sizes. It may be interesting for people who are looking for unique designs. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The pipes necessary for water supply and drainage are all placed inside the cylindrical column and the main pipes can be continuos between the floors for multistory houses. For houses where the main pipes are located in a shaft next to a wall a suspended ceiling is necessary to hide the extension pipes from the cylinder to the shaft. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Location of the project : Istanbul, Turkey. The design project was started on January 2010 and was completed on February 2012. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cylindrical column extending from ceiling to floor has a diameter about 60 centimeter and is made up of stainless steel. I have placed a structural system inside the cylinder consisting of 6 box profiles with 3x3 cm sizes. The curved blocks can be made from different materials, such as lacquered laminated plywood or DuPont Corian supported by metal profiles underneath. The profiles inside the cylindric column and the profiles of the curved blocks are connected to form firm supports. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The curved block is designed as 80 cm wide and 200 cm long, with a thickness of 4 cm. The cylindrical column is designed as stainless steel, but can be aluminum or even plexiglass since it does not carry loads. The curved blocks, the sink unit and toilette unit are carried by the steel profile system hidden in the cylindrical column. The diameter of the steel column is 60 cm and it's height is bathroom's height. TAGS: bathroom, shower, toilette, functional, unique, dynamic, esthetic RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea was to make a unique bathroom design. I was inspired by the swans. Much of the design effort was to gather bathroom elements around a cylindrical column to form a single functional unit. After many sketches and modellings I have reached this unique design. The main research was about technical details. CHALLENGE: The hardest part was to deal with the technical details such as which materials to use, and where and how to place water/drainage pipes.
