DESIGN NAME: Easy Domes
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dome house
INSPIRATION: The inspiration to Easy Domes occur in 1990 by design of a cultural house for the Society of Greenland People in Faroe Islands. The idea of an igloo shaped house built in between traditional family houses was reached by use of the basic polyhedra, the icosahedron, transforming it into plates of hexagons and pentagons. The modified dome design inspired to two tourism cottages built in 2000 in a mountain area, and today low energy, sustainable domes in new design are produced Denmark
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design and structure of Easy Domes is the Platonic polyhedra the Icosahedron - here by cut of vertices and with practice of five eighths of the full figure to 21 strong load- and stabilizing wooden sections. A quick and easy assembled building kit - only mounted with iron bolts, and suitable for a green, low energy and sustainable building. Interaction between floor area and a spatial volume offers interesting interior possibilities. Easy Domes are earthquake and hurricane resistant and implementable to all climate zones.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project contains the concept of quick and easy assembled wooden domes in the content of being the load an basic for sizes from 25m2 and 150m2 domes. Small domes only need manpower for assemble while bigger domes need a crane. 21 pc. pre-produced building sections raised to a dome, offering plain or complex one or two-floor interiors, with addition of i.e. two domes to difficult terrain or climate zone, additional resistance to earthquakes and hurricanes, are some advantages at Easy Domes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: From the first full scale cutted icosahedron, built in 1992 in Faroe Islands, the Easy Domes project began in 2000 with two test domes in mountain terrain. The project was financed by 60 percentage of costs from the Faroese Ministry of Industry. After 5-6 years of testing Easy Domes made agreement with the wooden production company Taasinge Trae AS, Denmark. Since Easy Domes are built as fully sustainable family houses and cottages in Denmark in 2008, and for spare time activities in 2010 in Unied Arab Emirates.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each dome contain 21 sections in pinewood and canadian douglas plywood. Edge-beams for framework are cut with exact beav-angels, length, and perforation for iron bolts for later assemble and raise of the dome. For tension drag in window sections, iron hangers are mounted for each of the two horizontal corners. Edge beams are glued and screwed at corners, and the framework is mounted with the assemble- and stabilizing beams. The plywood is glued, nailed to the framework and finally edge-milled.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design is linked to the polyhedra, the Icosahedron, in the content of the pure plate structure, seldom used as main load-bearing structure. Knowledge of lattice structures and some research on the plate-structure, set experienced building engineers to calculate for load-demands to chosen parameters. Even the limit of size of the Easy Domes at app. 150M2, because of the weight and size of sections, great dome-building advantages are offered to a world-wide group of users
CHALLENGE: The creative proses was to develop and combine the geodesic structure and building technique to a practical and functioning living area. Other dome-manufacturers for small domes use the lattice structure and needed special connectors. Plain plate structure can reach similar dome-sizes, and with traditional wooden materials, a computerized production and manufacture of ISO certified building sections, with no special connectors, fulfilling all EU-codes and international standards, is a reality.
