DESIGN NAME: X-Acto
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Precision Cutting Tool
INSPIRATION: I was inspired by the idea of merging DIY and utilitarianism. The X-Acto brand should be exactly this: creative and hands-on, while still precise and absolute in its function.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: DIY meets utilitarian. The reusable X-ACTO packaging recognizes the user's every need in terms of transport, storage, usage, and disposal. Additionally, the compartmentalized design ensures that all of your precision tools are safely and conveniently accessible.
Packaging looks as if it could have actually been cut out with an X-ACTO blade. The stacked design utilizes B-fluted corrugated and soy-based flexographic inks.
With a cutting-edge design that satisfies both form and function, the new X-ACTO packaging is the all-in-one solution for every designer and artist.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The X-Acto redesign is compact and compartmentalized for easy transport and use. The design has compartments for the knife and new blades, as well as a slot for old blades so that they cannot fall out after disposed. Furthermore, there is a slot for a 6" metal ruler, an essential tool that every X-Acto user should have on hand.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During the research portion, I conducted surveys to learn how people carry, use, and dispose their X-Acto products. Common complaints were about the hassle of having multiple X-Acto items (knives separate from spare blades and rulers) and about the many injuries caused by unreliable knife caps and used blades in the trash. I determined to solve these issues with my all-in-one design.
