DESIGN NAME: Butterfly
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: This piece is inspired in nature, particularly in Mexican "Monarca" butterfly.
This insect, in addition to its beauty and despite of the fragile appearance of its wings, is known for its strength and longevity. While other butterfly species have a life cycle of 24 days, this one can live up to nine months, 12 times more. The Monarca butterfly is capable of traveling more than 4000 kilometers (from Canada and the United States of America) to Oyameles states of Michoacan and Mexico (natural heritage of humanity).
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a highly aesthetic piece and yet very functional. It is designed to be produced in one piece. We use the wing shape and structure of a Butterfly to create a very confortable, aesthetic and light but strong piece of indoor-outdoor furniture. But what really makes this piece unique, is the fact that when putting one piece facing another, together they make the shape of a Butterfly.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The chairs can be used in indoors and outdoors, can be stacked by putttig one behind the other and have a very strong structure with no exceeding an operative weight, doesn’t have moving parts that could break or get lost. Maintenance includes just a regular cleaning, aluminum guarantees a long lifetime. They play also an interactive role when you put them together becoming a representation of the nature. It’s a result of the joint work of engineering, design and crafts.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Guadalajara Mexico, with the first scketches in 2010, then pased to a process of technical evaluation, were lots of changes happend, trying to lower the weight, quantity of material, assure the resistance, ergonomics, make one piece casting posible, etc. It wasn't until the 15th of april 2012 that modeling process started, then went to the mold production, wax, casting and finally sanding, to be ready for the Mexican design contest (Dimueble) on the 13th of august 2012.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Although initially it was intended for aluminum production, this piece can also be produced in different materials and processes, such as plastic, carbonfiber, bronze, etc.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The measures are 640mm x 635mm x 763mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We did research in many fields of knowledge such as insect anatomy, metallurgy and mechanics. With the goal of embodying the greatness and beauty of the butterfly wings, we did lots of observation to understand the proportions. The technical knowledge that we received from the artisans during the project was exceptional. We started with small paper models, then engineer students help us with the 3D model evaluation, and after 1/3scale was casted in order to evaluate every detail. Finally we reach the company’s mission: to merge ancient knowledge with modern design and involve the artisans to make it possible.
CHALLENGE: All stages of development were very particular challenges. We defined very quick the general characteristics, but the structural, transport and maintenance aspects kept us very busy, specially weight reduction without sacrificing structural strength.
The decision to manufacture the chair in one piece brought the biggest challenge, after doing the model carved in one piece, to make the waxes, we had to study and review the design many times (since the first sketches), looking for the best way to make the mold out of a full curves geometry. Handling a piece of wax of this size is difficult, and the melting process took 8 days long, to then go to the casting of aluminum process.
