DESIGN NAME: Autumn Leaves
PRIMARY FUNCTION: A window treatment item.
INSPIRATION: I was as much motivated by my own natural instinctive desire to create as by the desire to satisfy an individual client’s needs, hereby developing a window treatment item for aesthetic and practical purposes, and more particularly in terms of light maintenance within a dimly lit up room.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Compared with traditional window dressing, this set is original – leaf shapes made of unusual material ; aesthetic – imitating real leaves with their colourful, see-through, cobwebbed, veined effect ; practical – preserving minimum privacy (total or partial window covering), hiding an unattractive view, filtering light through/around material, being easily applied to a surface via self-adhesive backings, requiring no installation of accessories, minimum production time and being hand-washable.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: These easily detachable leaves may be bespoke items, but could quite easily be purchased in standard shapes and sizes and placed on, above or around a window with the help of already sewn in or self-adhesive velcro tape. These leaves may be applied to other surfaces (walls, furniture) hereby, extending the autumn theme. The colours may be uniform or varied. One may attach decorative elements to the leaves (crepe paper butterflies) or create other themes with different shapes (flowers, fruits).
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2011 in Metz, France on my own premises and finished in March 2011 in Metz, France.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Whether it be the more or less transparent main orange veined leaf (main picture), the two long and thin orange veined leaves or the smaller brown/red veined leaves (support views), they all illustrate on both sides a cobwebbed effect fabric with a more rigid fishnet type of fabric sewn in between . Each individual leaf has had the veins carefully measured, drawn in with special chalk, pinched and basted along these predefined lines before being securely sewn into place with a sewing machine.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: In the main picture, the more or less transparent orange veined leaf measures W = 800mm x H = 1450mm and the three other smaller more or less transparent brown leaves measure W = 430mm x H = 670mm. Concerning the support views, the two long and thin more or less transparent orange veined leaves measure W = 400mm x H = 1450mm respectively and the smaller more or less transparent brown or red veined leaves have the same measurements as those present in the main picture.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research carried out on product design was very much limited to the idea of conserving light in dark areas, particularly as this client needed much light for her sculpting activities ; of creating an item that would require little fuss or attention and that would nevertheless be aesthetically pleasing to the eye ; and finally, of defining a reasonable price in function of production time and product originality.
CHALLENGE: This item challenges cultures adhering to basic or no window dressing and is welcomed by those wanting light, aesthetics, little on their windows, no pulling of cords/curtains. Concerning the leaves, the problems of finding a light, fragile, rigid fabric to maintain leaf shapes on a window and of creating slight veins were resolved by placing a see-through, cobwebbed looking fabric on both sides of a rigid net-like material with slight pinching and machine sewing along predefined lines.
