DESIGN NAME: Monsti
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Storytelling Toys
INSPIRATION: Monsti was inspired by moms telling stories to kids, where children get involved and become characters. But today, with so much digital content, and the fear of kids becoming passive consumers rather than active participants, Monstiz aimed at integrating this tech into their everyday play adding an interactive element that lets kids express themselves freely and have fun visualizing, creating, telling and acting stories solo or with their friends.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Monsti is an innovative IoT toy ecosystem for kids aged 5-8, designed for interactive storytelling. The ecosystem includes a smart speaker, NFC prompt cards, a sensor band, and a projector.
Through the seamless interaction of these components, children can customize stories, infuse music, switch narrators, and engage in role-playing activities. This dynamic interplay sharpens observation skills, fosters visualization, and nurtures creativity, enriching the storytelling experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Kids activate the Monster Speaker by tapping its head. They start stories by tapping story cards. While listening, they can add music or change the narrator's voice with more taps. Smart wristbands prompt actions like jumping when characters do. They can use a projector to dive into the story. Activity cards offer different experiences, like painting or dancing. Moms can record stories on special cards.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2022 and finished in May 2023 in Milano, Italy.

CHALLENGE: How do we make storytelling exploration more interactive and simple?
The storytelling process was made more fun and easy for kids by simplifying the game, language, and activities through long research and experimental workshops with kids. The goal was to make everything easy to understand and use. The cards were designed to be used spontaneously so that the kids could enjoy them without feeling overwhelmed by the rules.
