| DESIGN NAME: Rocks PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Storage INSPIRATION: The inspiration behind this project was to create furniture that is both enjoyable and practical, while also adding value to the life of users. With cities becoming increasingly crowded and apartment sizes shrinking, there is a demand for multifunctional furniture that takes up less space yet serves multiple purposes. The rocks draw inspiration from nature, with the intent to have interesting forms rather than aiming for the typical boxy modular or multipurpose furniture designs. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Rocks are a set of multifunctional pieces that are highly adaptable, serving as bookshelves, storage units, coffee tables, seating, stools, or displays, effortlessly tailored to specific requirements or occasions. The rocks can be stacked on any facet as needed. Each facet of a rock is crafted from calibrated plywood and veneer, expertly manufactured using a 5 axis CNC machine, ensuring each edge is seamlessly matched at various angles. The aim was to create Fun:ctional pieces OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Rocks can be used as one desires, serving as bookshelves, storage units, coffee tables, seating, stools, or displays, effortlessly tailored to specific requirements or occasions. They can be easily lifted and stacked according to the needs. The interesting colours and options to stack them on facets make them super interesting and can be arranged in a variety of ways. They can transform a space from an empty corner with display storage to a coffee table set. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project Started in November 2022 in Mumbai, India & Finished in November 2022 and was exhibited at Raw Collaborative Exhibition 5th Edition in India. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The rocks are crafted from calibrated plywood and oak veneer, with each facet manufactured using a 5 axis CNC machine to ensure precise and smooth planar edges that seamlessly match at various angles. The use of calibrated plywood aids in precise veneer gluing. Each facet is joined together like a jigsaw puzzle using carpentry techniques. The finish is an Italian Water based Matte Finish. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: There are four rocks of different colours Burnt Walnut Width 620 mm x Depth 395 mm x Height 375 Green Width 610 mm x Depth 440 mm x Height 400 mm Black Width 645 mm x Depth 532 mm x Height 350 mm Blue Width 620 mm x Depth 395 mm x Height 375 mm Material Calibrated Plywood and Oak veneer. Finish Italian water based matt finish. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Both online and offline research studies were conducted on furniture marketplaces and physical stores to understand the available multifunctional furniture in the market. Visual data was collected via websites and by taking pictures of products in retail stores and homes within the personal network. The insight was that while there were some multifunctional furniture options available, they were limited to just two functions, and the shapes were very boxy and modular. This served as our starting point to design multipurpose furniture with interesting forms and functionalities like storage, seating, tables, stacking, and display pieces. CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was not only to break away from the stereotypical form of boxy modular furniture but also to make it multipurpose. Each edge of every facet joins its adjoining facets at different angles, posing a challenge. Writing a new program for the CNC machine for each facet was necessary, and we had to ensure optimal utilization of the material as well. It was time consuming, but the final product with the correct finish made it all worth it.
