DESIGN NAME: Nonino
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Serie of Furniture
INSPIRATION: With the increase in people working from home, I saw the opportunity to create a desk that could maintain order without the need for storage actions. Inspired by the idea of concealing these elements, I took inspiration from a Bureau desk with a lid that belonged to my grandfather, hence the name Nonino, which I redesigned to meet current needs. From this initial concept, the shelving unit and coffee table emerged to complement both domestic and work-related use.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Nonino is a furniture series consisting of a desk, coffee table, and shelving unit designed for home office use, integrating work and domestic life. It is distinguished by a sliding roll-top storage system, which, in the case of the desk, allows for the concealment of work elements until the next workday, thereby helping to maintain a tidy home. The series includes an electrical outlet, USB ports, LED lighting, and wheels for easy movement, adding functionality to the furniture.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To work, it's only necessary to open the desk, which, like the rest of the furniture, features a roll-top that opens with just a gesture. The laptop and mobile devices can be charged using the built-in outlet and USB port. The bookshelf can be easily moved closer to the desk without scratching the floor for better access to work items, thanks to its wheels, just like the coffee table, which can be moved closer to the couch for enjoying a coffee break or watching a series at the end of the day.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in January 2018 in Cordoba, Argentina, and concluded in July 2023, and was exhibited the Argentine Furniture Fair.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The furniture is made of veneered MDF, with the desk legs and shutters crafted from solid wood, and the shelving unit's structure made of iron, all coated with polyurethane paint. It is produced in my own carpentry workshop, outsourcing some processes like CNC wood cutting and carving. The sliding doors feature a glide system with plastic wheels to prevent friction. All the furniture is sold assembled, but they are designed to be sold unassembled to other countries to facilitate shipping.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of the furniture are:
-Desk W 1200mm x D 600mm x H 900mm
-Bookcase: W 600mm x D 4000mm x H 1800mm
-Coffe table W 1200mm x D 600mm x H 360mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project's research focused on the user experience, aiming to address a rising work-from-home trend that became established with the COVID-19 pandemic. There was extensive research into home life and work tasks to merge these seemingly opposing concepts. Additionally, exploring through models and prototypes was necessary to ensure the lid system could slide effortlessly.
CHALLENGE: The project was designed to be manufactured in my own workshop, so the biggest challenge was to ensure that the sliding shutter system worked correctly with the available technology and to be able to produce it in quantity. It was proposed that this system could be opened with just one finger.
