DESIGN NAME: Goodbye Icarus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Book Design for Graphic Novel
INSPIRATION: The work was driven by coastal residency. Combining visual narrative, coastal explorations, and programming art, it delves into survival themes by reimagining the myths of Jingwei and Icarus, showcasing reflections and possibilities in the face of adversity. My background is multi-disciplinary, so I want to reflect this technical perspective in my work.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "Goodbye Icarus" merges mythology, personal narrative, and motion design, reimagining Jingwei and Icarus's myths within the context of modern challenges. This project, through visual innovation and coastal residency, invites dialogue across time and reality. It uniquely combines TouchDesigner's immersive visuals with illustration, focusing on metaphors and narrative. Blending with digital precision through Risograph printing explores the intersection of design, motion, and illustration.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: "Goodbye Icarus" is a book that comes alive with stories from old myths, made fresh with modern twists. Picture flipping through pages where drawings move and change, showing the dance of waves and tales of heroes. It's special because it makes old stories feel new and exciting, using a mix of art that moves and traditional drawing, all while keeping everything crystal clear and vivid. It stands out by making you feel part of the story, blending the past with today in a way that's easy to dive into and hard to forget.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My research blends dynamic visuals with traditional illustration, inspired by a year by the Rhode Island coast. I experimented with capturing wave movements and integrating these with Risograph printing for a unique design texture. This approach not only enhances my design language but also suggests new ways for multiple art disciplinary to collaborate, enriching both societal and illustration landscapes with fresh perspectives.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge for me was finding a way to merge interdisciplinary thinking with design expression. Traditional illustration needs innovation, prompting me to explore digital painting, coding, and special printing techniques. By leveraging the strengths of digital language, I uncovered diverse visual possibilities across digital screens and physical prints, pushing the boundaries of conventional design.
