DESIGN NAME: Papera
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sustainable Hotel Booking Platform
INSPIRATION: PAPERA introduces a sustainable platform to the hotel booking experience, merging digital innovation with eco-conscious practices to revolutionize the way travelers engage with sustainable travel. PAPERA implements a sustainable hotel ranking system, allowing users to make informed decisions based on a hotel's green practices such as using green disposables or not, and introduces a green credit system that rewards eco-friendly behaviors, turning sustainability into a rewarding experience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: PAPERA aims to build a new hotel booking platform, exploring the development of systematic sustainable solutions to enhance the green travel experience in hotels. The key features are integrating physical eco-friendly practices with a digital system to promote environmentally conscious behaviors among hotel guests. The digital interface implements a sustainable hotel ranking system, amenities focused on sustainability, and a green credit system designed to guide and reward customer behaviors.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: PAPERA will experience a transformative approach to travel, aligning their journeys with their environmental values. By selecting hotels that are ranked for their sustainability efforts, travelers can directly contribute to reducing the environmental impact of their stays. The green credit system incentivizes users to engage in eco-friendly behaviors, such as choosing a high-ranked sustainable hotel, opting for paper-based recyclable disposables or not using them, or participating in hotel recycling programs. These credits can be used for discounts or rewards, encouraging a cycle of sustainable practices. Additionally, PAPERA simplifies the process of making environmentally conscious choices, integrating them seamlessly into the booking experience. This not only enhances the travel experience by adding a layer of purpose and responsibility but also empowers users to become active participants in the global movement towards sustainability, improving their daily lives by aligning personal values with actions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2023 and finished in January 2024 in New York.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The production and realization of PAPERA's sustainable booking platform are grounded in platform development technology and sustainable design methodologies. The digital interface was developed using agile development processes, allowing for iterative testing and refinement based on user feedback to ensure a seamless and intuitive user experience.
Materials for the physical aspects of PAPERA, such as eco-friendly promotional items and packaging, are sourced from eco-friendly content like recycled paper pulp and biodegradable materials like seaweed extractions to minimize environmental impact. The selection of these materials was guided by life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies to ensure that the choices made significantly reduce the carbon footprint and resource use throughout the product's life span.
Papera is utilized user-centered design (UCD) methodologies to ensure that the platform meets the needs of its target users and stake holders effectively. This involved conducting surveys, interviews, and usability testing to gather insights, which informed the design decisions from the layout to the features. Make sure the platform guide users to make sustainable hotel booking choices and encourage hotels to optimize more sustainable facilities and services.
By integrating sustainable practices into both the digital and physical aspects of the platform, PAPERA exemplifies a commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship, setting a new standard for digital platforms in the hospitality industry.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: As a digital platform, PAPERA is designed to be responsive, automatically adjusting to the screen sizes of devices ranging from smartphones to desktop computers, ensure interface use across multiple devices and a consistent user experience. This adaptability is prototyped through a grid layout system, where the interface elements dynamically resize and reorganize based on the device's screen dimensions.
The ideal technical backbone of PAPERA includes HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript for the front-end development, ensuring compatibility with modern web browsers and devices. For the backend, it will utilize a secure, scalable cloud infrastructure that supports real-time data processing and storage. The platform will be optimized for a minimum bandwidth requirement of 256 Kbps, ensuring accessibility even in areas with limited internet connectivity. Additionally, it will incorporate advanced security protocols, including SSL encryption, to protect user data and transactions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Tourism produces >35 m tons of solid waste annually (United Nations Environmental Programme and United Nations World Tourism Organization, 2012). These negative environmental impacts are expected to worsen in the future because tourism represents one of the driving forces of economic growth (United Nations World Tourism Organization, 2020) and is largely expected to reach the pre-pandemic level by 2024 (United Nations World Tourism Organization, 2023). According to Booking.com’s Sustainable Travel Report 2023 which contains insights gathered from more than 33,000 travelers across 35 countries and territories. “76% of travelers express a desire to travel more sustainable and 500,000+ accommodations globally are being recognized for their sustainability efforts with a Travel Sustainable badge on Booking.com”. We want to cater to this trend by building a transformative approach to travel, providing a more environmentally conscious and educational experience.
CHALLENGE: The development of PAPERA presented a challenge of bridging the gap between sustainability in the hotel industry and the digital experience of hotel booking. The project needed to navigate the historical and social contexts of travel and hospitality, ensuring that the platform not only offered a sustainable alternative but also resonated with users' desires for convenience and luxury.
The greatest obstacle was integrating physical eco-friendly practices with a seamless digital interface. This required not only a deep understanding of sustainable materials and practices but also advanced technological solutions to make these practices visible and impactful through the digital platform. The project also had to contend with the availability of reliable information on hotel sustainability practices and the technological infrastructure needed to support the platform.
