DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: Ba's Garden
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Compact Spouting Experience
INSPIRATION: Future farming demands adapting human behavior for environmental harmony. Urbanization harms ecosystems, large-scale farming imperils biodiversity. Sustainable cities require changed resource usage. Self-sufficient gardening addresses space constraints, mitigates food crises. Ba's Garden integrates farming into cities with automated hydroponics for eco-friendly, rapid microgreen growth. Accessible modular systems provide a transformative urban agriculture solution.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ba's garden is an innovative urban living solution that employs state-of-the-art soilless and self-watering techniques. This cutting-edge system utilizes a grid tray to enable plants' root systems to grow continuously, ensuring a reliable supply of high-quality nutrition. Additionally, it's also useful for germinating sprouts and microgreens that are abundant with essential nutrients that promote good health.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user-friendly and compact sprouting device is crafted for easy use with readily available materials. It features a simple installation process, operates without the need for soil, demands minimal watering, and is ideal for constrained spaces. This device excels in shaded areas at room temperature, constructed with sustainable materials for all its components. Users can relish the joy of growing plants with minimal time and effort, allowing harvesting within 5-7 days.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2022 in Lund and finished in December 2023. It was exhibited at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in February 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This component, comprising low and high pots and a germination-friendly tray, is crafted from Earthenware for resilience against environmental and temperature variations, maintaining optimal moisture for small seeds. The tray facilitates sprouting, retaining water for germination. Its adaptable grid accommodates seeds of any size, ensuring gradual water provision throughout germination, making additional watering unnecessary. A self-sufficient system, it streamlines the growth process.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width: 190 mm x Depth: 190mm x Height: 180mm
TAGS: Garden Appliances, Garden Equipment, Green Design, Sustainable Products
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project employs the following methods: problem identification, research, interviews, visual design, ceramics, and low-fi/high-fi prototyping.
CHALLENGE: The challenge in designing the project stems mainly from the intricacies of existing germination tools. The setup of these tools involves a diverse array of materials like soil, hydrated mats, LED lights, and spray cans, resulting in excessive water and material usage throughout the entire sprouting process. Additionally, it is challenging to find comprehensive kits for different seed sizes, posing an additional hurdle. Ensuring precise germination through various methods has proven difficult, especially during the Rinse and Drain cycles, where meticulous attention is essential to prevent the potential danger of bacterial contamination, which could rapidly escalate during the sprouting process.

I am profoundly inspired by the innovative approach to urban agriculture exemplified in "Ba's Garden," an ingenious project that adeptly addresses the pressing issues of urbanization, biodiversity loss, and sustainable living. The blend of advanced soilless and self-watering techniques, alongside the strategic use of Earthenware for creating a resilient, temperature and moisture-regulating environment, showcases a forward-thinking solution to food scarcity and the necessity for eco-friendly urban planning. By integrating automated hydroponics with a modular system that encourages the growth of microgreens and sprouts, rich in essential nutrients, this design not only promotes health and well-being but also significantly contributes to the creation of sustainable cities. The meticulous attention to detail in overcoming design challenges, such as the optimization of germination tools and the prevention of bacterial contamination, further highlights the project's commitment to environmental harmony and resource efficiency. It is a compelling example of how design can transform the way we interact with our natural environment, fostering a future where human behavior is in sync with nature's rhythms. The dedication and insight brought forth by the designer in developing "Ba's Garden" are truly commendable, setting a benchmark for sustainable design in urban settings.
