PRIMARY FUNCTION: Skincare Packaging
INSPIRATION: The brand draws inspiration from the Maori tales of New Zealand. It aims to embody the vibrancy and mystery of the earth and ocean in products and impart the wisdom and power of Maori culture. The packaging comprises three thematic shades of green, red, and blue, with green representing the robust vitality of the MAMAKU FERN, red from the energy rich red alga, and blue symbolizing the conus in the mysterious ocean, highlighting the purity of the product and its efficacy in caring for skin.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The ancient Maori tale of New Zealand inspires this packaging design. The packaging incorporates the original natural species of the MAMAKU FERN, red alga, and conus in New Zealand, aiming to convey the deep and inextricable connection between humans and the earth. The design utilizes fossil figures of plants and animals to imply the combination of natural plant and animal ingredients and modern technology, introducing consumers to natural and pure skincare products.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The cap of the bottle is printed with the natural element pattern of the key ingredients of the product so that consumers can intuitively understand the composition of the product, which enhances the reliability and attractiveness of the product. The serum products employ rotating telescopic droppers to provide consumers with a convenient and safe use experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: In November 2020, the project was launched in New Zealand and was created and developed in collaboration with Sephora, a subsidiary of LV Group. The project was presented at the branded Shanghai show of Sephora from November 17 to 19, 2023, and launched in December 2023 at Sephora in China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The surface texture of the packaging mimics natural stone, providing an enhanced tactile experience. The embossing and debossing treated surface not only enriches the overall tactile and visual experience but also gives a third dimensional sense. The cap employed PP and ABS materials and an embossing process to imprint the key ingredients pattern of the product onto the surface. Additionally, the multilayer spraying process improves wear resistance and durability.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Maori people of New Zealand are known for their deep respect and gratitude for nature. In traditional Maori medicine, several plant and animal ingredients have been identified for their skin repairing properties. Drawing inspiration, the design team has explored the earth and sea, carefully selecting ingredients with unique bioactivity and efficacy. These ingredients have been applied to skincare products through modern extraction and processing technologies for anti ageing effects.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was encountered in expressing the Maori lore and reverence for nature through the packaging. To address this, the packaging design pays tribute to the natural heritage of New Zealand by employing three of its original natural ingredients as the core visual elements and presenting them on the outer box as figures of fossilized plants and animals. The design aims to showcase the ancient and enduring life force of nature, echoing the anti ageing advantages of the skincare product.
