INSPIRATION: According to reports of 2022, about 50% of Iranian students and entrepreneurs have desired to emigrate from their country and 62% have not decided to return back. Olka means homeland in Persian language and it was created by the inspiration of Iranian youth who immigrate with the aim of creating a better life. Migration brings mental, emotional and even physical pains, but pain is an opportunity for growth. In this case, every slit provides the basis for creating a new beautiful flower.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Leather is a durable material, but usually the threads used to sew leather crafts, lose their quality sooner than leather, so creating the seamless leather bags can be effective in increasing its quality. Olka is non-stitched, the modular leather pieces are interlocked together, which increases the speed of production, and if needed for repair, the damaged piece can be easily replaced with a new one. It even gives the possibility to the user to order the bag in separate pieces and make her own.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This bag consists of modular leather pieces that are interlocked together. The consumer can order this bag in separate components and will make the bag according to its manual and it will have a great emotional connection and sense of belonging with the product.

The "Olka" project, an innovative Non Stitched Bag, stands as a testament to the power of design in addressing profound narratives and pushing the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship. The thoughtful consideration behind its creation, drawing inspiration from the aspirations and struggles of Iranian youth seeking a better life through migration, imbues this piece with a deep emotional and cultural resonance. The choice to employ a non-stitched, modular approach not only reflects a commitment to durability and quality, elevating the timeless material of leather through a seamless design but also aligns with a sustainable mindset by facilitating easy repairs and personal customization. This methodological innovation, supported by extensive research into interlocking systems and consumer behavior, exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to design that respects both the material's legacy and the modern user's needs. Moreover, the dual-functionality of the bag, with its inner component that can serve as a standalone accessory, showcases a keen understanding of versatility and consumer desire for value and elegance. The challenges faced during the design process, particularly the concern for the final product's strength and the user's experience in assembling the bag, highlight the rigour and dedication invested in realizing this project. Recognizing the achievement of being awarded the A' Design Award in the category of Fashion and Travel Accessories Design speaks volumes of the creativity, dedication, and innovative spirit that defines the essence of this remarkable work by Maryam Hosseini.

The recognition of Maryam Hosseini's "Olka" as a winner of the A' Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories Design category is a testament to the innovative and poignant nature of her work. The concept of a non-stitched bag not only challenges traditional leatherwork craftsmanship but also introduces a sustainable and modular approach to fashion accessories. The interlocking mechanism enhances the product's longevity and adaptability, reflecting a deep understanding of material properties and consumer needs. What strikes me most profoundly is the inspiration drawn from the socio-cultural phenomenon of migration, embedding a powerful narrative of hope, resilience, and the quest for a better life into the very fabric of the Olka. This work does more than just push the boundaries of design; it serves as a poignant reminder of the stories we carry and the resilience inherent in the human spirit. Maryam Hosseini's ability to weave together functionality, sustainability, and a compelling narrative into the Olka bag is truly commendable, making it not only an exemplary piece of design but also a beacon of meaningful innovation.
