| DESIGN NAME: Micro Beauty PRIMARY FUNCTION: One Piece Dress INSPIRATION: This artwork portrays the chaos of plastic pollution in the Taiwan Estuary. Through microscopic examination of shore collected plastic fragments, a mesmerizing microcosm is revealed. The artist's narratives prompt viewers to confront the environmental damage. Inspired by the vibrant patterns in the micro world, colorful plastic fragments are used to draw attention to global contamination issues, encouraging a reassessment of our role and mindset in addressing unsolved problems. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Designers can be problem solvers who challenge established limits and frameworks to lead revolutionaries. This design draws inspiration from the microscopic world through observations of plastic under a microscope, which adopts eco friendly materials as the design base, including wool felt, smocking pleats, and digital printing fabric to create a conflict of tradition and innovation, conveying the concept of environmental conservation through its design. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The cloak worn over the shoulders features openings on the sides for hands to come through, secured with a butterfly bow in the middle. This design aims to provide stability and ease of movement, offering greater flexibility. The one piece dress, designed for ease of wear, utilizes butterfly bows on the shoulders for fastening. Its lightweight fabric allows easy movement and breathability, reducing weight and bulk which offers a flattering silhouette when worn. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Aside from digital printing cloth with patterns observed under a microscope, wet felt fabric technology is implemented, blending various colored wools on a carding machine and combining the fabric with wool felt flower, digitally printed cloth, pleated sheet, tulle, and pleated sheet with strips crafted with a smocking pleater machine. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Cloak with bows: length 1067mm, shoulder 381mm, bust 838mm, waist 711mm. One piece dress: length 940mm, shoulder 432mm. The cloak features folded tulle and sheer, pleated with a smocking pleater machine, adorned with a ribbon butterfly bow, creating volume with layers. The dress is crafted from wet felt fabric, digitally printed fabric, wool felt flowers, and pleated cloth strips. Blending wool sheer fabric introduces wrinkles with additional inner layers, creating a cake like silhouette. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Digital printing cloth starts with computer designed patterns. The Princess Pleater creates pleats when fabric is rolled in, opting for folded tulle and sheet material strips. Wool felt, crafted by blending wool with a carding machine with needle felting and wet felting, involves soaking wool in soapy water, agitating it to bond into fabric. After trying different methods, wet felting was adopted to blend multicolored wool with woven fabric, creating floral shapes and textiles. CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of this design is translating research into the wet felting process of wool. Experimentation revealed that wool felt is single use due to its stiffening properties post felting, and felting with fabric leads to shrinkage. This design is completed using the handcraft wet felting technique. To represent the colors and textures of the microscopic world, it requires extensive calculation and extensive experimentation to achieve ideal colors, textures, and shapes.
