DESIGN NAME: Aeon Wallet
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Comprehensive Financial App
INSPIRATION: We emphasized the importance of catering to individual users. While many Japanese financial apps previously featured crowded screens with numerous functions and ads, our research of 1,300 users revealed that only a limited number of functions were actually being used. To prevent users from overlooking valuable information due to information overload, we proposed a simple design philosophy and an app UX that allows users to customize information and functions as needed.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Comprehensive financial services provided by Aeon group, a huge conglomerate operating in Japan and Asia with 17,900 stores, 570,000 employees, and sales of 9 trillion yen. Aeon targets suburban/rural residents with limited digital and financial literacy. A user-friendly app redesign aims to cater to all users by customizing information based on their needs. This ensures a personalized experience, minimizing the risk of missing critical information.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We aim to prevent information overload and ensure users get all essential details. Users can customize the UI and skins according to their needs to foster user attachment and usage, and they can quickly grasp their usage status through visual representations and interactions, regardless of their financial literacy. Furthermore, we provide disaster preparedness features in our daily contact services to enhance disaster awareness and ensure smooth actions and peace of mind during emergencies.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Tokyo, Japan. The concept and visual identity planning started in September 2022, detailed design, development, usability testing, etc., began in December 2022, and the application was released in September 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The app's framework is "Flutter", enabling efficient and speedy development. The operability and user-friendliness were confirmed at an early stage with implemented functionality, allowing for improvements. Furthermore, "Lottie" was used for some animations, such as tutorials and object interactions, to achieve smooth and unique movements in a lightweight manner.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Our goal is to provide a user-centric experience, including a home UI where users can select defaults, recommendations based on usage, and suggested features even without user selection. We aim to offer a new payment service that differs from conventional services. Additionally, we provide channel options like widget provision to cater to various scenes.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Surveying other companies' services revealed dissatisfaction and latent needs in current payment and financial services. We also explored the primary functions used by our cardholders, in-store tasks, and usage scenarios for each financial product. Using data from user interviews conducted from concept study to public release, we designed a dynamic, personalized experience that improves literacy and continues to be conveniently used.
CHALLENGE: In Japan's payment market, various providers like credit cards, QR code payments, electronic money, and BNPL are vying for space. Many Japanese financial apps aim to become "super apps", yet Japan's cashless ratio stood 36% in 2022, low by global standards. Users need help to keep up with the plethora of options, and Aeon Wallet strives to offer the best experience by providing simple functionalities and clear differentiation from competitors.
